Graduation

Hi - I'm a UEA student graduating this summer and I'm extremely nervous for graduation day. My family are forcing me to go. It is quite literally my worst nightmare. The whole thing scares me so much. To ease my anxiety I've been trying to read up on what to expect of the day but I'm not having much luck. I'd appreciate any experience of recent graduation ceremony over the years. Like what happens?? Are we told where to sit or can we sit with friends? (I only made one good friend so I'm worried) Pls help :frown:

Congratulations.

It's a typical graduation ceremony. It's kind of like what you see in graduation ceremonies for high schools and universities in the US, but nowhere near as expensive or as grand. You would typically sit in the Congregation Hall (lower floor where you sat for your exams) for the speech (typically next to your family members - seats are assigned to prevent chaos), then you meet up for photos afterwards - you know like normal school photos but you wear a gown with it.

You will need to hire a gown to wear prior to all of this, and you normally get dressed up somewhere near the Congregation Hall.

If you want to do the typical cap throwing ritual, you typically do it in the square.

It's nothing to be concerned about; it's like it's kind of like the last day of school but at uni.

If you wanted to, your family can meet the family of your friend. However, it's usually uni friends meeting up with each other before going their separate ways.

What I strongly recommend is to exchange contacts with as many people as you can e.g. Insta, Facebook, etc. Even if you're not that close, they can be valuable contacts for work later on. Who knows, you might end up making more friends through the process.
