University support

Hi
I am looking at courses and universities that I would like to possibly attend. I am profoundly deaf and learning BSL when i go to university i will be BSL level 4 probably , I am also level 1 autistic and would like to know what universities you attended and the support available and if you found it useful. Even if you only have one of my disabilities then any experience will be appreciated. thanks

Hi!

I do not have anything similar to you however I can definitely reassure you that there will be lots of support available to you at university. It will be worth contacting them before you go but they will have specific teams available that will be able to assist you and make your uni journey the most enjoyable that it could be!

What universities are you thinking of applying to? You should be able to find out all about the support they offer and the teams they provide to support people In your situation either on their website or by contacting them directly!

Good luck for everything going forwards, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hello!

It's very exciting you're deciding to come to university! I am a profoundly deaf student, I don't use BSL but do wear a hearing aid. I have found Lancaster to be very supportive with my disability. Lancaster has a disabilities team and every disabled student has an Independent Learning Support Plan (ILSP) which is sent to the module convenor of every module you have. This plan is also used for exam arrangements, for example I do my exams in a separate room sat at the front so I can hear the exam instructions. Also, before every module, most module convenors email me explaining the format of the module and any arrangements they can put in place that would help me. I have found this to be very helpful as my course (Earth and Environmental Science) includes lots of lab practicals and outdoor field trips. The disabilities team have also been very helpful for sharing any opportunities that become available for disabled students as well as being on site for any DSA issues.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions,
Lucy (Lancaster University Student Ambassador)

Hi!

At LSBU, we have a strong Disability and Dyslexia Support (DDS) Team who can help you set up the right support as a deaf student and someone with autism. They can arrange things like BSL interpreters, notetakers, captioned resources, extra exam time, and study support based on your personal needs. Since you’ll be BSL Level 4 by the time you start, they’ll work with you to make sure any communication support matches your preferences. For autism, they can help with settling in, creating routines, and making adjustments to help you manage uni life more comfortably.

In addition to DDS, LSBU also has a dedicated Student Wellbeing Team. They offer support for mental health, counselling services, and advice for managing stress, anxiety, or anything that might affect your wellbeing during your course. They also help with accessing quiet spaces and strategies for managing overwhelm, which can be helpful if you're autistic.

If you’d like more information, you can contact the teams directly:

Disability and Dyslexia Support Team (DDS): 📧 [email protected]

Student Wellbeing Team: 📧 [email protected]

Both teams work together to make sure students get the right help in place from before you start your course and throughout your time at LSBU. You won’t be on your own; they’re there to help you settle in and succeed. You can contact the Student Support Service.
