DSA Study Tech Nightmare!

Bear with me, i have ADHD and have ranted a lot. But, i wanted to try and fit everything in.

I applied for DSA as needed a desktop PC for the Cyber security course i am doing. Basically due to my condition, it gets uncomfortable leaning over the desk, viewing a laptop. It is much more easier to view a desktop monitor. Anyway, I had my assessment with study tech and was approved for desktop pc, software, etc. I was asked if i wanted them to install the software. I said no, as i am confident with how computers work, etc I can do it. They asked if i would like to upgrade the PC, but at the time i couldn't say yes because a) I didn't know what PC i was getting, b) they wouldn't tell me how much i would need to pay for an upgrade. They never told me the make or model of PC, i only knew what it was upon dispatch notice when my list of equipment appeared on my study tech account. Before this the list just stated WKH laptop, which i questioned, and it was amended to WKH Desktop.

Moving forward, I set up the PC a Acer Veriton N6000 mini desktop. No issues! It had an i5 CPU, gpu was only an onboard one, but i wasn't using it for gaming or anything. Ram was 8GB and SSD was 512MB. So it was just below minimum for my cyber security course. Ideally i would need a minimum of i7 CPU, Graphics card 6GB, RAM 16GB and SSD 1TB. But it was ok for now.

So, I received the emails from study tech with the links to download the assistive software. Downloaded no issues, but within a few days, the PC started to act up. I thought at first it was the GPU as it was only an on board one. So, at first the PC kept switching off into safe mode after trying to download the programming software i needed from the OU, as it wasn't certified but knowing it was safe, i assumed it was just windows security blocking it. I downloaded the same OU software on my laptop and had no issues, and it was fine. I ended up saving the file and installing it that way, and it seemed to work on the desktop. (No, I wasn't going to risk my laptop with the assistive software)

Moving forward, Microsoft Word started to play up, it would not open, and only open as admin. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, nope same issue. I took dragon off word as an add-on, nope same issue still. Whilst this was going on, my browser pages, both edge and chrome would struggle to load pages, so i disabled speechify. It was better, but still glitchy. I went back to word, and tried to open a word document direct from file, it was now saying that word didn't exist?? I went into the command prompt, ran a few codes, and yup it didn't exist. I went to registry to check, there was some word bits there, but not everything. The Word.exe file was there, but at the same time didn't exist. I contacted study tech and explained everything, they basically didn't have a clue what i was talking about, and tried to blame me for the issue, and tried to claim that the Open University was at fault with their software, although i said in the email, these issues only started after downloading the assistive tech software. They then wanted to gain remote access to my PC and were quite addiment that that was the only way to fix it. I refused, as i know this isn't true, so i sent them a file of registry issues, which is what they claimed they were going to be looking at anyway if i allowed them access, no response to that, despite showing several errors. I did mention this to the OU, but they have never had any issues with their software, and couldn't understand why my pc was shutting off during the download. The PC seemed fine before i downloaded study techs assistive software. So, after talking to the tech team at study tech (who clearly were script reading and had no clue about PC jargon), I did a clean wipe and fresh install of windows, minus their assistive software. The PC was back up and running, and word was working again. Oh, i forgot to mention, i did do a virus/malware scan and nothing came up.

Within a week, the same issues started to happen again, corrupt registry files, files not opening, programs disappearing, internet pages not loading, my Bluetooth hardware then became corrupted, and didn't exist anymore, despite being on there, but with driver issues. Driver would not roll back, would not fix with a disable, uninstall, install. It was obvious i had malware running rife that was going undetected. Whislt i was looking at the list of drivers, another triangle suddenly popped up on acer firmware, then my pc switched off and died. It would not boot, and only sound one long continuous beep. Which is either a failed RAM or failed motherboard, according to Acer's beep code guide.

I emailed study tech again, explaining all of this again, and also stating that the links they provided for the downloads were corrupt, and infected my pc with malware (one that can obviously go stealth). On top of which i requested that all future ATT lessons be cancelled as i no longer need them (didn't need them anyway, it was like teaching me to suck eggs), and there isn't an option to cancel on my study tech account.

I was ignored, with my ATT lessons still active. I ended up emailing the ATT tutor and explaining this all again. All i received was I am sorry to hear this, can I give you a call or can we meet, to close things up?? I was already annoyed at this point, and said no, i don't think that is necessary. I then received confirmation of cancelled lesson which stated that my tutor cancelled. However, study tech has marked it down that I did not attend (I guess this is for payment purposes?)

After all of this, i am left with a dead PC, no help from study tech, no replacement PC from them, as it clearly states on their website to return your PC it needs to be working and unused!

Luckily my dad bought me a new PC with greater specs and one i can upgrade at a later date if needed. But, not everyone is in a position to do this, my dad isn't either and he wouldn't have done it otherwise. I am now in pain using my laptop on the desk, but i know it is only temporary, But, if that was the only PC i had for my studies then my studies would be affected massively. I also asked for an adjustable desk that can adjust in hight, so i can stand and staudy too, due to my ADHD, we like to move around etc. These desks are designed for ADHD too, as well as physically disabled. I was told i couldn't have one, as I wasn't physically disabled. Nor could i have an ergonomic chair, as i wasn't physically disabled. I could only have the assistive tech (which they push on us students a lot), the PC and a camera, speakers etc. Basically things i didn't really need, only the PC.

Study tech are awful with their DSA customers. We are allocated up to £27000 a year because of our needs, and we can barely see £2000 of it, with computers that are clearly not up to scratch, and providing corrupted links for software. They require you pay £200 up front for an inadequate computer, and if you want to upgrade your DSA won't cover it and you will have to pay more. When you do run into problems they go narcissistic and blame you for the issue, when it wasn't, then acting like scammers to say the only way to fix your PC is by allowing us back door access?? Then ignoring you again with the information they requested. Oh, i eamiled them after the fresh install, and said it appears that the PC is working now. They spammed me with numerous emails stating that they are happy that THEY have fixed the issue!!!! Complete joke, and con artists, taking the mick out of the vulnerable. I read somewhere that another student contacted SFE with regards to the amount we actually get for DSA compared to the advertised amount that the government states you can have up to, and not supplying students with the equipment that they actually need. SFE ignored them.

Trying to find complaints about Study-tech is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I have only found two complaints, and they way they behave, i very much doubt they have only upset three people!

Contact DSA and tell them about your issues. They can escalate to StudyTech, which will be taken seriously, and hopefully the issues will be resolved.

So, I'm a graduate medical student. I had a similar experience with my laptop for my first degree (biochemistry). It had such low specs that I couldn't use the assistive software. I constantly needed to send it off to be looked at because I couldn't run more than one application at a time. It was either run word to do my assessment or run the assistive software- I could never run the two together and I nicknamed it 'Craptop' as a result. I was told I had to contact my needs assessor, and the company that did my needs assessment just ignored my emails asking for an upgrade. I then asked DSA several times for a workable laptop and got told to talk to the supplier instead because the needs accessor wasn't listening. The supplier told me to ask DSA because they need DSA approval to make changes to the laptop.

It took contacting my local BBC radio station's consumer advice show for DSA to actually upgrade my laptop to something workable. The laptop I was given was i3 processor and 4GB RAM. I got an i5 processor with 8GB RAM, which my dad then modded because by the time I got a working laptop, I was halfway into my third year.

I'm now going back to university and I'm choosing my own laptop. I have a few in mind with higher specs to run the software.

I have also had an absolute mare with them. Taking ages between emails to the point that month long sales on computers ran out so I'd have to buy it full price or look myself. That's now happened three times. I am literally at my wits end and still dont have a laptop. I'm post-grad so I remember when I first started uni, DSA was so much easier to navigate and communicate with.
