How I got a fund from City University to study one month in France in the end of my M

Bonjour! I’m Thaís, and I’m writing this post directly from Nice, in the south of France, where I’m currently taking part in a mini exchange program, partially funded by City St George’s.

Let me explain in more detail. City’s Global Opportunities Office offers several ways to help students study abroad, focusing on both academic and professional development. Although many of them are aimed at undergraduate students, a few are available to postgraduates as well.

One of these is the Turing Scheme, a UK government program that provides funding for international opportunities. It includes a grant to help with living costs in the destination country and an additional grant based on socio-economic factors.

The good thing is that any student can apply for the Turing Scheme, even internationals. That’s how I, a Brazilian, was able to benefit from it. I chose to pursue an international language course because I had already studied French at City during the semester, so it seemed logical to deepen my knowledge by applying for an intensive course in Nice.

In this type of scheme, students are responsible for finding their own institutions abroad. When applying through City, we need to provide an estimate of the course fees and accommodation options.

As a journalist, it was very natural to show how learning another language and experiencing a new culture could expand my analytical and social capacities. And also increase the range of job possibilities for me in Europe.

My four weeks turned into five after I arrived and fell in love with Nice. My French level has also significantly improved, and I’ve moved from B2 to C1 during this period. I was able to speak, read, write and discuss, immersing myself in the culture. After all, even buying a pain au chocolat in a boulangerie is an exercise

I’m writing this post because not many people in my class knew about this program, and I think it is a very good opportunity for master’s students. You can find all the technical details in this link:
https://studenthub.citystgeorges.ac.uk/career-development/experience-and-study-opportunities/study-abroad-and-exchanges#accordion858893-international-language-courses.

Applications are open twice a year, so pay attention to the deadlines. Also, to be accepted in the program, your exchange must last at least four weeks, so make sure to ask about the course duration when searching for the schools.

Bonne chance!
