Will sacrificing AH English affect my Uni applications for Law?!

Hey!

A little bit of context: I'm currently in S6 and planning on going to Glasgow Uni to study Scots Law. I worked pretty hard during 5th year and although I haven't received my results, I am predicted to do very well...

I wanted a (slightly) more laid-backed final year of High school so only selected 2 Advanced Higher subjects and 1 higher. My plan was to take AH Modern Studies and AH English alongside Higher RMPS. However, my school's timetable system wasn't great and AH ModS and AH English clashed so I ended up getting AH Business Management.

This is fine as I was always quite good at business and reckon I can do well however I'm not sure if this will benefit me for my UCAS application. I know AH English is a really good subject to have for Law so my options are to either swap it in place of AH Modern Studies, teach myself the course or not take it and stick with AH Business.

I'm tempted to stick with the latter because I always think it's best to get strong grades with subjects you know you are good at but I don't want to be at disadvantage when it comes to applying for my course. Although AH Business is still a good subject I am unsure of whether Universities would favour someone who had AH English instead? In theory, I could teach myself AH English but I fear it would be too overwhelming and take away key time from my other studies. Alternatively, I could replace AH Modern Studies with it but I honestly enjoy Modern Studies so much more and also reckon I could get a better grade.

So I'm very stuck on what to do. Any help from UofG Ambassadors, fellow students or anyone else would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you

Hey! (:

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of thought into your S6 choices, and you’re absolutely right that it’s important to balance ambition with what’s realistic and enjoyable for you!

In terms of university applications, as long as you meet the entry requirements, your application will be considered fairly. While subjects like AH English are definitely useful for developing skills relevant to Law, doing well in the subjects you’ve chosen still shows strong academic ability, which unis value just as much!
You’ve also got other opportunities to show your passion for Law through your personal statement which you can mention any extracurriculars, wider reading or experiences.😊

If you know you’re more confident in Business and Modern Studies, and think you’ll perform better in them, sticking with those could be the better choice overall, AH English would only be essential if it were listed as a requirement for the course!

Hope this helps, good luck!!

Glasgow requires just 1 advanced humanities subject OR English at B. You don’t need to sit English at all. I got an offer with Adv Modern and I dropped English at higher.

I’d recommend just sticking with your subjects, teaching yourself an advanced higher may affect your other grades. A good score in modern is what matters most, and if you’re more confident in that then stick with it!

Modern is just as good a subject for law than English, I did a dissertation on drug law reform which really fit in with my personal statement.

Edit; Note that Business isn’t generally considered a humanities subject. Not that this will necessarily affect your application since you’re doing modern BUT if you somehow end up struggling with your subjects, don’t drop mods.
