Applying to uni after a gap year + retakes – need advice!

This is quite a long postt
I’m currently in the middle of sitting my A-level exams and expect to achieve A*BB. I didn’t apply to university this year, as I wanted to give myself time to reflect on my goals and improve my academic profile. My intention is to apply next cycle to study Psychology at a Russell Group university—most likely Exeter, Southampton, Birmingham, or Sheffield—all of which typically require AAB.

To meet (and hopefully exceed) these requirements, I plan to retake the subjects in which I achieve a B, with the aim of securing A*s. However, my current school does not allow former students to retake A-levels with them, so I will need to register as a private candidate. While my school is willing to provide a reference, I’m unsure if they will include predicted grades for my retakes.

Given this, I’m looking into alternative options to secure predicted grades—such as working with private tutors or enrolling in an online learning provider. If I’m ultimately unable to obtain predicted grades, I’ll apply without them but highlight the consistent A* standard I’ve achieved in tutor-marked assessments. Since the Psychology courses I’m targeting typically admit over 90% of applicants, I believe I would still stand a reasonable chance with a strong application and demonstrated academic improvement.

In the event that I don’t receive any offers, I’m prepared to take a second gap year and reapply with my final, improved grades. During this gap year, I plan to stay productive by volunteering, working, completing online courses, and developing transferable skills like coding.

I am really stuck on what to do. I know I should focus on doing the best I can for my A-levels but its stressing me outtt. I want to know what the best option is for my situation any advice?
Most universities will accept applicants with A*BB for an AAB course. You should be able to find a place at one of your chosen universities to start in 2025 without needing to retake.

Have you looked to see if any of them are still open to late applications for your course?

If you do choose to resit then you don’t need predicted grades. Universities will just assume that you expect to improve your results by at least one grade (because if not you wouldn’t bother resitting).

I would strongly recommend that you just apply now though.

By late applications, do you mean Clearing? I'm not happy with the grades I think I'm going to get, so I’m considering retaking. I was already planning to use my gap year to do volunteering and get some work experience anyway, so it could actually help me get ahead especially since psychology is such a competitive field.

You are completely overthinking and your strategy is illogical. You should apply this year and then decide all this on the basis of facts in August, not angst now. Focus on your current exams. Do the best you can now. See what grades you get in August. Plan on facts from there. But you'd have more options if you held uni offers now.

Late applications are between the January deadline and the end of June.

During this time you can still apply as normal it’s just that applications move from being “equal consideration” (which applies before the deadline) to first come first served.

look on UCAS and filter the course search results to only show courses with vacancies - very few courses are closed to applications.

Birmingham, Exeter, Sheffield and Southampton psychology courses are all still open to applications. The course isn’t as competitive as you are assuming.

Apply this week to all 4, for deferred entry in 2026 if you are planning on a gap year. You will almost certainly get a place if you get A*BB and then you can just enjoy your gap year

Hi @anayikanayik, I would also suggest applying this cycle if you can. If you can get your UCAS application sorted and sent off before the 30th June you won't go into Clearing, so you might have offers from your chosen unis before results day. If you apply after this you'll go into Clearing and you'll find out on results day 🙂

Lots of unis take into consideration your overall tariff points as well as your grades, so there's every chance you'll be at uni this year rather than 2026 or even 2027 if you do apply now. It's always better to put yourself out there and see what happens.

Good luck and hopefully we'll see you in Southampton in September 😀
