Postgraduate routes to becoming a chartered Town Planner

Hi,

I am currently looking into undertaking an employer sponsored postgraduate course to enable me to become a chartered Town Planner. I am considering applying to several universities (UCL, LSBU, UoW and ARU) although I'm really unsure on what type of course to pursue (i.e. Master's or Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship).

I'm 22 and I understand the government are pulling funding for over 21s for Level 7 Apprenticeships from January 2026. My questions based on this are:

- As long as I'm enrolled before January 2026 will my employer still get the current entitlement to apprenticeship funding?
- Is there any obvious benefit to doing a Level 7 Degree Apprenticeship instead of the Master's equivalent over and above cost?
- Is there a limit to how many courses you can apply for?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your message and interest in studying at London South Bank University (LSBU). To address your queries: If you are enrolled in the Level 7 Chartered Town Planner Degree Apprenticeship before January 2026, your employer should still be eligible for current apprenticeship funding, assuming all criteria are met at the point of enrolment.

This apprenticeship leads to an RTPI-accredited MSc in Town Planning and offers the advantage of earning while learning, with tuition fees covered by the employer, making it a cost-effective route to becoming a Chartered Town Planner. In contrast, a standalone Master's provides more academic flexibility and may be completed in a shorter time.

A key benefit of the apprenticeship route is the structured, work-integrated training and mentoring that aligns closely with industry needs. You can apply to as many universities or courses as you want, but it's best to limit your applications to ensure quality and alignment with your goals.

For admissions-related queries, please contact Admissions at [email protected] or +44 (0)20 7815 6100. For apprenticeship-specific enquiries, you can reach the Apprenticeships Team at [email protected] or call +44 (0)20 7815 7325. We’d be pleased to support your progression toward chartered status.

The apprenticeship team will also be present on the open day, July 5th. You can come in and speak to them https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days
