Loughborough Art and Design Foundation

Hi! I’ve accepted a place at Loughborough to do the Art & Design Foundation this September. I’m an international student and was wondering if anyone else is doing it too, or has done it before?

I’d love to hear how people found the course. I’ve heard from a few people that it can feel a bit isolating if you’re not into sports, and since Loughborough is really known for that, so I’m a bit worried about fitting in.

Would love to hear from anyone doing the foundation year or just starting in 2025 too

I’m doing the art and design foundation starting this September as well! I don’t do any sports so I’m a bit scared about that limiting my social life, I have a friend who just finished lboro though and she said that a lot of people don’t do sports although the majority do. You just have to find your people!!!

I don’t study this course but I have just finished my first year at Lboro… There is definitely so much more to Loughborough than sport, so do not worry about fitting in! I highly recommend getting involved in your hall events during freshers, as well as attending the “freshers bazaar” where all the societies will showcase what they’re about…

I am also starting the same course in September, am not very sporty and an international student. Do you know if there are any groups chats or online community groups for our course to join where we can all chat before September?

Hi, I did this course a couple years ago and it was amazing!!! I had so much fun and made such good mates. I think there’s something about doing an art course at a sporty uni that makes everyone band together, so we properly all got on, and my friends from other courses were so so lovely too, especially my international friends who are now friends for life. It’s also a great course, I’m off at The University of Edinburgh now and loads of other people I know are at amaze unis like UAL x

Hi! I know you’ve started the course now, but if it’s still relevant: I did this course fairly recently and personally have mixed opinions. I definitely loved the first term and the way you try out everything, I found most staff very approachable, the library amazing, and the practicals we did very helpful. I picked textiles for my specialisation, and my main gripe with it was just the lack of those staff and practicals. They did tell us straight up that it was a bit overwhelming having fifty people pick a specialisation usually only chosen by, and geared up for, their usual cohort of fifteen. This pressure did bleed through in the way of a couple of members of the department becoming, in my opinion, overly harsh in the way they spoke to us, with certain people in my class also having been made to get up and bin their work (in front of the class) when it wasn’t considered good enough. I can understand they were also probably trying to prepare us for how things can be in the art world, but personally - with the state of my mental health at that time - it had the opposite effect and made me scared to come to class for periods of time. That was the main downside for me. I also wished there would’ve been more practical classes as that’s what I thought the course would be, but honestly it’s just a matter of knowing - if you’re considering the textiles route - that it’s predominantly about making studies of what you see around you, and turning those sketches / paintings into repeat print patterns.

May I ask what you’re thinking of specialising in, and if you signed up to the workshops during the first couple weeks of term? Because if I could go back and do anything different, it would be to sign on to as many as possible.

If you have any questions, I’m more than happy to answer them! I know I’ve brought up a lot of what was challenging about the course, but overall I’m glad that I did it. Most of my struggles were just personal issues, and most people I knew there had a great time, and the course helped them easily transition into undergrads at Loughborough or other high ranking Unis. Everyone I knew had a much more impressive portfolio because of it. Hope this has been of help. x
