Is the politics and international relations course at York University 'woke'?

So I was reviewing the course content and noticed words like 'gender', 'intersectionality' and 'feminism' crop up a lot. Not that these aren't worth discussing but it seemed to take up a lot more of the course than I would have expected. I was hoping for more "traditional" teachings like different political theories and diplomacy, are they still present?

as far as i can see, there is one optional module in year 2 on the politics of gender, which is the only thing i can find that references gender/intersectionality/feminism. i wouldn't exactly say it 'takes up a lot of the course'. i doubt that they wouldn't teach you different political theories or diplomacy in a politics course

Don't worry about being woke. That just means that you're not totally cynical and you care about people.

If you read the details of each module it is mentioned quite often. However, you're right it doesn't take up most of the course, just more than I had expected just reading the module titles.

I didn't even want to use the word woke, I just couldn't think of a different word. I even want to learn about this concepts haha!

Hi Lewisrk89,

It's great to hear you are interested in coming to study at York. I'm a York Politics graduate so happy to tell you about my experience of our BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations course. The course covers a broad range of units because it seeks to place you at the heart of current political thinking, research and debate. This includes traditional political theories and contemporary issues. The course also includes many optional modules enabling you to tailor the course to your interests. For instance, I became really interested in Counter-terrorism so chose to specialise in this and do my dissertation on it. From my experience the course was really easy to tailor to what I was interested in and the modules I took all encouraged heathy debate and critical thinking rather than one point of view being correct. If you have any questions about specific modules let us know and we'll answer.

All the best, B

"Political theories" all discuss feminism, gender and intersectionality to some degree especially any modern political theory

Thank you for the response, this clears things up. To be clear, I am very interested in contemporary issues as I mentioned, so I like that there is a range. I just think I was confusing the optional modules for core ones, thank you again.
