Love this idea!

For context, I'm Kiera, a third-year psychology student at York St. John University

I realised around Year 11 or 12 that I wanted a career that involved helping people in some way. I was lucky enough to attend a psychology taster day at a university while I was still in secondary school, and that experience sparked my interest. After that, I knew I wanted to study psychology at A-level.
Alongside psychology, I also took biology and computer science, although I didn’t enjoy those subjects as much. Psychology, on the other hand, really stood out to me. I started exploring different career options and discovered that a degree in psychology would be the best path forward, so that’s what led me to where I am today! I'm just about to hand in my last few assignments, and then I'll be finished with my undergraduate degree. In September, I'll be starting a Master's in Research in Psychology!

When it came to choosing a university, I already knew I wanted to study psychology, which is offered at most universities, so I focused more on other factors. I looked for places with strong support services, good staff-to-student ratios, high-quality research, and a city I could see myself living in. I absolutely fell in love with York when I first visited, and now that I’m here, I’m honestly very reluctant to ever leave!

This is a wonderful idea on National Higher Education Day! I've shared some bits about my journey before but I'll definitely do so here too!!

Here's my Higher Education story:

In school and sixth form, I'd always been interested in learning and studying about many things - I did Psychology, History and Performing Arts! I think on top of that, I always wanted to see the world outside of my town just outside of Birmingham. Walsall, specifically, which you'll know if you follow lower league football or come from the West Midlands - otherwise if you heard me say it, you'd probably think I just said 'Warsaw' which just ends up with me just saying I'm from Birmingham. While it'll always be home in some way to me, I didn't see myself staying there, I needed somewhere new, a little more vibrant and full of character.

That's where Liverpool comes in.

Liverpool has without a doubt, changed my life for the better, I genuinely don't think there is a city like Liverpool - the people you meet, the city to explore, the docks to experience and the places to eat and drink. The character of the city is simply something else, vibrant and real. That's why I've lived in the city centre throughout my time at Liverpool Hope University, commuting to study, living in the city, down the road from everything. The free shuttle bus and great transport links get me where I need to be!

What bought me to Liverpool Hope specifically? The course combinations offered, if we were to take it literally, but what bought it home for me was the look of the campus, the communication before I even arrived on campus and then the friendly lecturers who really want to get to know you, and support you in your studies. Sure, I now do Politics and International Relations, which is offered left right and centre - with how well I did, I could have gone many places, including being still in Liverpool. But I started with Psychology and International Relations! My decision to change course is a story in itself, but at the core of it is that I was supported in my time here when I was still finding my footing in what *I* wanted to do here at Hope.

I chose Politics and International Relations as my subject because I have always had an interest in learning more about the world around me and how it works. I believe it is very important to be politically engaged and knowledgeable, as it always has been. Studying this subject is a way in which I have been able to be both politically engaged and knowledgeable.

I enjoyed this course through and through from the beginning until the end. The best part about the course is definitely the range of specialisms the lecturers and tutors have. Learning about the nuances of international relations and organisations, the ins and outs of domestic politics not only in the UK, US and EU, but also across the world, has been eye opening. Furthermore, the lecturers are passionate about what they teach and are always there to advise, educate and assist throughout studies.

Now, I'm doing my Masters here, have got involved in soooo much during my time, and happened to pick up my fair share of work experience to make ends meet along the way! After that, the options are numerous! Going into the Civil Service? Working in an International or Humanitarian Organisation? Becoming an Ambassador? Being elected as a Councillor? Getting involved in political advice or lobbying? Training to be a teacher? My options are numerous!!

Thank you for reading and letting me share my story!

All the best wishes to everyone in the future,

Harry

Hi, I’m Maddie! I’m in my third year at De Montfort University, studying Health and Well-being in Society.

Ever since I was little, I always said I wanted to be a teacher and that continued all the way through to college. I considered everything from primary and secondary teaching to working in special educational needs. Because of that, going to university was always in the back of my mind as something I knew I’d need to do.

When it came to choosing my degree, I reflected on what I’d studied and enjoyed during school and college. I had taken Health and Social Care for both my GCSEs and BTEC (amongst other subjects) and I absolutely loved it, it felt natural to me and some topics even felt like common sense or essential life skills and I did really well in both coursework and exams. I was especially inspired by my younger sister, who has complex special educational needs, which is what originally sparked my interest in SEN teaching and the broader world of health and care. I also studied A-Level Psychology at college and really enjoyed it, I found all the studies, like Milgram, Zimbardo, and Harlow, very interesting

That’s what led me to choose a degree in Health and Social Care or in my case, something closely related, Health and Well-being in Society. I didn’t want to commit to a teaching degree straight away in case I changed my mind about the career path (and side note: I have!)

Since I’m from the West Midlands, I knew I wanted to stay local. I visited a few universities, but it was when I came to DMU and learned more about the course that I had that “gut feeling” it was the right fit and it absolutely has been!

Some of my favourite memories so far include receiving First-Class marks on a few assignments it was such an amazing feeling, especially as I’ve always been quite self-critical and struggled with confidence in my writing because of an experience during college. Another favourite memory was completing my recent internship at DMU as the Heart Safe campus Co-ordinator, this was an amazing experience and I met some incredible people and picked up a lot of different skills.

I can't believe my university journey has nearly come to an end 💗

Such a cool idea! It's a day after the National Education Day haha but thought I'd still chip in with my experience.

I'm Fatiha, a final year Psychology student at Cardiff University!

Choosing universities was really difficult for me - I had a really hard time picking my firm! I ended up choosing Cardiff though, because I really liked how good the placement year seemed to be. Since the university has been offering placement years for a while, they've developed a contact list of opportunities and that was super cool to me! But also, I chose it for the student life. I wanted to live someone that had a bit of a nature vibe, not too industrial, and a uni that had an active student union with lots of activities to do

I chose Psychology, because after doing Psychology A-Level, I was just so fascinated about brain science! During Sixth-Form, a teacher had advised me to go for what I get the most excited about, because you're more likely to work harder for it and do well and now...here we are! Having done 4 years of Psychology

Favourite memories of Cardiff, would probably be all the student activities I managed to do! From performing to the spring showcase, to doing a caving trip for only a fiver! There's so many memories that I don't think I'm able to fit into one post

Uni 1 - BA Music (later converted to fake MA :woohoo: ), Woosta College, University of Oxford

Why did I choose this uni?
Initially the uni was effectively selected for me (in that there was huge parental pressure to apply/get in. In any case, it was the only non-London uni I would have been allowed to go to!) and I went along with it grudgingly. Open days and summer schools at Ox really were a gamechanger for me: quickly fell in love with the buildings and the close-knit tutorial system and some of the course content. Applied and the rest, as they say, is history! :moon:

Favourite memories
There's a lot to choose from but my absolute faves would have to be:

my post-Finals (third year/end of degree exams) trashing. I got covered in two bags of confetti, received two garlands, two balloons, and lots of cheering as I emerged from the building. My exam finished half an hour after everyone else, and I was isolated in a separate room for everyone's safety  , but so many people stayed to wait for me to come out, which really meant a lot :colondollar:

wheeling a set of timpani across Oxford city centre around midnight after a concert, wearing Santa Claus hats

conducting my college orchestra performing my orchestral arrangement of a 15-minute Disney medley, whilst standing on a podium of Argos catalogues wrapped in brown paper, so that the whole orchestra could see me (I'm quite short)

Uni 2 - MA Music, Goldsmiths, University of London

Why did I choose this uni?
I was looking to live at home and my Oxford dissertation supervisor was quite keen that I either go to Goldsmiths or to North America, to continue my studies. He wanted me to work with a specific person at Goldsmiths. I looked at the course and it seemed quite forward-thinking and cool, and more to my academic tastes and interests (which had been considered 'not compatible with the Faculty' for Oxford's MSt course, which I got rejected from  )

Favourite memories
I don't remember much of my time from this degree in all honesty, as I was rather unwell and shouldn't have jumped back into a Masters at that point :colondollar: My favourite thing was my DSA (Disabled Students' Allowance) mentor. She was amazing. She once phoned up my psychiatrist's secretary to tell him off about something, which I found hilarious

Uni 3 - PhD Music, Royal Holloway, University of London

Why did I choose this uni?
Again, was looking to stay in London. Royal Holloway has a strong ethnomusicology profile, and they had seemed quite welcoming when I applied there for the Masters :yep:

Favourite memories

walking past Founder's always makes me smile :h:

being asked to give a speech in Chapel for World Mental Health Day a few years ago

taking my (second) lead supervisor to ABBA Voyage. He was so speechless by the time it finished

being a paid Student EDI Worker in 2022 and working on some projects. One of these was a wellbeing and diversity handbook for my School (Performing and Digital Arts)

making a short film (yet to be released - watch this space) about my PhD :smartass:

Hi @CamembertPaws

What a fabulous thread!

Why did you choose your university?
I chose the University of Salford for several reasons:

1.

Location: Being a southerner, I was keen to explore new pastures and knew that the University of Salford was near big employers in my field (the performing arts) such as BBC Salford and ITV. Additionally, I like the proximity to Manchester where there is something for everyone any time of day e.g. theatres, cinemas, shopping, live music - you name it!

2.

Vocational: I learn best by doing and liked Uni of Salford's focus on practical experience and employability, that not only did you get to try out something hands on, it was in a safe learning environment and enabled you to gain experience and most importantly work out if you enjoy it. Meaning when it comes to seeking work afterwards, I would have relevant experience and feel confident in my ability to apply the skills I have learnt.

3.

Institution: I fell in love with the green campus when I came for my tour and could tell that the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming. I am a disabled, mature student and the university couldn't have been more accommodating.

Why did you choose your degree?

I am just about to graduate with a three-year BA (Hons) in Theatre & Performance Practice. Following ALOT of research and comparing various institutions I settled on the Uni of Salford for a variety of reasons:

🧡 Course Content: I loved that you could not only choose several modules including modules that weren't offered at many other places when I applied such as Acting for Motion Capture and Radio Performance & Production.

🧡 Agents Showcase: As someone keen to pursue a career in acting I know how important it is to get an agent and Salford was one of the only (non-drama school) institutions that offered the chance to audition for an Agents Showcase, this was really fun and such a great extra learning experience.

🧡 International Opportunities: I have always liked the idea of studying abroad for a short time, so when I saw that Salford offered this for my course I knew I had to give it a go and was fortunate enough to participate in a month long Global Summer School in Canada last summer - one of the best months of my life!

Some of your favourite memories:

💛 Visiting Niagra Falls when studying in Canada last year! 🇨🇦

💛 Having fun at Mature Students society events with mature students studying across the university 🤩

💛 Being able to help students get positive results when I gave their feedback to staff at Uni in my role as a Course Rep! 💭
