Diagnostic radiography

Hi everyone, I'm starting a diagnostic radiographer in September 2025, and like I want to know what stuff I should bring with me when I start the course. I would also like to know if using a tablet or iPad is convenient for the course????

You will need a basic laptop to write essays, presentations, dissertations, etc. Unis will give you a list of what is required for placement when you arrive so don't worry about getting things in advance.

Hi @wave-to-earth

I hope you’re well, and congratulations on your offer to study Diagnostic Radiography! That’s so exciting 🎉

I’m currently studying Diagnostic Radiography, so I can definitely share a few tips with you. When it comes to what to bring, here are some essentials that I found helpful:

Comfortable shoes for placement (you’ll be on your feet a lot!)

Stationery (highlighters, pens, etc...)

A folder or organiser for important course/placement documents

Clark’s Pocket Handbook for Radiographers honestly, this is a must-have. It’s so useful for quick reference, especially during placement and practical sessions.

Now, when it comes to devices, having a laptop is handy, especially for writing assignments or taking online exams. That said, I started with a laptop and later switched to an iPad, and honestly, that was the best decision I made.

As a visual learner, I found the iPad incredibly helpful with radiographs, which are essentially the images you take. I could zoom in, circle fractures, find patterns, and make direct annotations on the slides using apps like GoodNotes. When I used to rely on my laptop, I had to type notes under PowerPoint slides and sometimes forgot what I was referring to. The iPad helped me link my notes to the actual images and content I was learning.

That said, some students only use a laptop, others only use an iPad, and some use both! If you’re only using an iPad, just keep in mind you might still need access to a laptop for certain tasks. At some universities, including BCU, for example, there’s a laptop borrowing service, so people who mainly use an iPad can borrow a laptop when needed for things like exams or lectures.

As mentioned by @normaw , your university will provide you with a list of necessities for placement, along with your placement uniform. I’m happy to help if you have any other questions.
