Medicine uni application

Is there any way of me studying medicine at univeristy with a-level biology, English lit and fine art. I will finish my a-levels in 2026 and I am trying to find a way to study medicine. Does anyone know how I can study it with these a-level subjects?

Why did you take these subjects if you wanted to do medicine?

Hi Erinb0,

Although I am not an admissions specialist, I am pretty sure that your options are limited for Medicine with that choice of A-levels. So you may need to adjust what you are studying which may mean starting University a little later than you had anticipated.

For the medicine degree as well as the graduate entry medicine degree (where you do a medical science degree before you go on to the medicine degree) here at Bangor University. You need a biology A-level or equivelant as well as another science (Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Maths / Further Maths / Statistics) as well as an array of other qualifications which can be found on our website https://www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/a100-medicine-bmbs.

My best advice is to start visiting Open Days and ask the admissions officers at the Open Days who will be able to give you excellent advice.

If Bangor University is of interest to you, we have Open Days this summer:

Saturday, 05 July 2025

Sunday, 17 August 2025

More information: https://www.bangor.ac.uk/openday

You could also e-mail [email protected] for detailed information about your options.

Good luck with your journey to get onto the medicine course
Ffi 🙂

I wasn’t sure at the time of picking them what course I wanted to do!

So what made you decide to do medicine? Is there anything else you would like to do with subjects that you have already chosen?

There are unis that will consider applications from students without chemistry - in fact Newcastle doesn't stipulate any particular A level subjects at all, it just restricts a few. If you look at their website they say: 'AAA in any subject excluding General Studies, Use of Mathematics, World Development, Communication and Culture and Critical Thinking'.
I would focus on those if you are serious about medicine - some will want to see passion for what you do, not just that you've ticked the 'bio, chem & maths' box.
What is really important though is a high UCAT score and also some work experience/volunteering that demonstrates that you have the skills required to be a doctor - an understanding of what the role entails and current issues etc also important.

Also UEA can be applied to with only biology. They say 'Applicants are expected to be taking a minimum of 3 A Levels in Year 13 and be predicted AAA or above, including Biology/Human Biology or Chemistry and two further A level subjects.
Critical Thinking, Citizenship Studies, Leisure Studies, Applied Science, General Studies, BTEC qualifications are not accepted.'

Hi!
As said before, there are some unis who will consider applicants with no Chemistry a-level. Of course, without it, it's more difficult to get in, however, if you have a strong personal statement, UCAT score, a good interview and a range of different extra and super-curricular, such as related research or work experience, that stands out, it is still possible to get in. Also, just another thought, if you are offered to complete the EPQ, do it on a medical topic- just a another plus as an applicant!

Hope this helps!

University of Buckingham also only require biology, but they are a private medical school so you need to have around £45k a year to spend on fees! On the plus side, you don't need to do the UCAT to get in there! Some unis also offer a 6-yr course for students who didn't study the right subjects at A level, so you could look into those.
