PGCE funding issues

So I’m about to graduate this year and I’m wanting to go into primary school teaching, so I need to do a PGCE with QTS. I already used up my extra year of funding but I spoke to SFE and they said PGCE courses are exempt anyhow so that’s all good.

Issue is, my mum won’t fill out the form for a means tested maintenance loan as she doesn’t approve of me doing another year of uni and things have been strained between us the past 2 years. I’ve lived in a non-student apartment with my boyfriend for the past 2 years supporting ourselves from our maintenance loans and part time jobs, and have recently moved in with his parents.

I’m trying to work out if I even need to put my mum down for means-tested maintainance or if I would count as either independent - though my previous loans were means-tested - or estranged, though I’m not sure how that needs to be proven. Alternatively, does it has to be my mum I put down, or could it be my boyfriend’s parents since they’re the ones we live with and are supporting us?

Any advice in this area would be great, thank you!

Hi Charli,

Can you confirm your age and do you have 3 years of self support prior to the start of this course?

Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

I’m about to turn 24 next month, I’ve been working various part time jobs since 2022 which were to support me alongside my maintainance loan which my mum provided her info for. I lived in my own apartment with my boyfriend for 2 years and was in a student house the year before that, I didn’t go back home at all and was funded fully by part time work and maintenance loans.

I’m just not clear on whether this counts as self supported or not as although my mum filled out the info for my maintainance to be means-tested, she didn’t give any money towards my living / uni etc.

Hi Charli,

What it means is that in order to assess you as an independent student you'd need to supply 3 years of self support (P60's etc) through paid employment or in receipt of state benefits such as: Income Support, JSA, incapacity benefits, invalidity pension or maternity allowance, PIP or DLA. (this is not a exhaustive list)

The three years of self-support does not need to be consecutive. If you don't have this or it doesn't apply to you then we would assess you for the basic rate unless you're mum is willing to provide her details. She can do this up to 9 months after the course begins. So in the meantime, you can apply for the rest of the funding and also check with your university to see if you qualify through them for any additional finance. Thanks, Jason
