Are there any work experiences or competitions for me? :)

❤️ Hey guys ❤️
I’m currently a year 10, aspiring for all 8s and 9s on my GCSEs and I think I want to go into medicine but I’m not sure yet. I know what you’re all going to say, “Just focus on your GCSEs” but I’m already getting good grades and would like to put myself in a better position for later down the line.
Ps. If anyone had any other career suggestions that would be really helpful. My best subjects are:
- Biology
- English language
- Drama
- History
Anything would be rly appreciated, thank you so much! 😊

Any research opportunities would be great. I have a research poster competition to offer you: https://nexuscompetition.carrd.co which is completely free, international and allows you to get your work judged by professional phd level researchers. The poster can be about any topic within any subject or combination of subjects, so perfect if you still aren’t sure about what you wanna do! Deadline: July 10th 2025 9pm BST

i would say not to go into drama unless ur absolutely 100% sure that's what u want to do as it's very hard to get a job in any other field with a higher qualification only in drama, if u think u want to go into medicine, they probably won't allow u to actually do anything medical-related if u apply to work at a hospital due to ur age but if u apply to do some work-shadowing (just watching) in different areas of a hospital, they may allow this (I also did this myself). that way u can get a feel for the specific area of medicine u want to go into, e.g. paediatric, surgeon, nursing, etc. work shadowing can also look good on ur cv as it could be seen as voluntary work
hope that helps

Thank u, this is rly helpful. Re: drama, I’m not thinking about actually going into acting cuz ik that’s a rly unstable job but to go into medicine, would it be good to get an a level in this as I’m pretty confident I can get an a star in it and many people have told me to do biology, chemistry and then some random other subject. Also, how important is it to do chemistry as I’m fine at it but it’s not what I enjoy the most. (Sorry ik I’m asking u a bunch of questions but u seem to know what you’re talking about). Thanks ☺️

If u look at the royal society of biology, they sometimes post competitions and opportunities suitable for high school students. Just keep googling essay competitions, there are quite a few around the year for under 18s. RSB even do photography competitions. You just always have to keep an eye on.
I would highly recomend try contacting local hospitals or care organisations but I'm assuming ur under 16 so it might be a bit challenging. If u haven't done ur worlexpero3nce yet, try contacting day cares as they sometimes allow under 16s to do a week of work experience.
Medicine is a great career but similar based in your interests could be: Biomedical scientist ( doing lab test for diagnosing using patient samples, so a very important role in hospitals! But less to none patient contact), medical writer, working in public health based in what i can think from ur interests. Do research all of them, and you might even want to look into some related careers. If u like the science aspect of med then biomedical science might be something to consider if u like the care aspect allied health carers are quite good as well. If u struggle to find work experi3nc now, try again after year 11 as u will be 16 then
Do prioritise ur gcses as for experi3nce u can always fit that in or even take a gap year if u don't get in due to lack of it, but grades are quite important . Tbh u just need to have discipline where u manage the two together but if u have to chose, chose grades especially in second term of yr 11, stay focused in exams, and in the long summer afterwards, dedicated to experience.

I would say it's pretty important u take chemistry as a lot of unis may require this to get accepted. If ur taking both bio and chem, I think you'd need a pretty chill subject to go with it as they're both very content-heavy so if u think this is drama for u, then go for it. Most of my friends that are doing medicine rn, did bio, chem and maths and we all hated maths cause it was just too much, so yeah pick something u don't think will take too much of ur time and/or u find easy (but pls remember, just because it is easy at GCSE, this may not be the case at A Level as for many subjects the jump from GCSE to A Level is quite big so just try to find out from other students who have taken drama if this was the case for them).

Hey just a note on this most unis would also require maths. I'm not sure who gave you the advice to do a chill subject but most competitive med applicants would be doing at least three sciences/maths - you could do a fourth fun one if you want to though.

yeah for sure, it probably depends what u want to do at uni as one of my friends did bio, chem and spanish (as she found that to be her chill subject) at A Level and is now studying to be a paediatric nurse at a rlly good London uni, but if u want to do something lab related or anything that even could possibly require a specific other subject, pls do look into this.

Incorrect. Very few universities require maths for medicine. Also not correct that most competitive med applicants offer 3 sciences/maths. Having something non-science as third A-level is EQUALLY acceptable for the majority of medical schools.
