will my gcse grades restrict me?

im doing my gcses right now and i just have a weight on my shoulders. obviously, like most people, i want to apply to oxbridge/imperial. i feel like my gcses will hold me back. i feel like its the end of the world.
what i think i got:
9999999876
obviously ur going to say ive got so many 9s and that i shouldnt be complaining, but contextually, my school is rlly academic and i feel like my dreams are lowk just slipping through my fingers. sorry im so dramatic but i think that 6 in history might kill me

i think you should be fine because none of your subjects are really relevant to history. but some unis do look at your GCSE grades, so maybe it might affect slightly? im doing my gcses too and I am literally feeling the same way as you, so don't worry too much about it. i got cooked in english language. surely getting a 6 in history instead of 7 can't affect your life much

I don't know if this helps but I got 777788999 and Imperial still gave me an offer. I had friends with higher grades not get in, I think they care the most about predicted grades and experience/extra stuff. Can't speak for Oxbridge though. Also, try not to stress until you get your grades. You don't know you got that 6 or that you got those 9s.

I'm gonna be so fr GCSEs don't matter nearly as much as you think. I'm sitting on 4 offers, 3 of which are from Russell groups including one from my dream uni, UCL, for one of the law courses (8% acceptance rate last time I checked!). All of this despite my GCSE grades which were far lower than yours (I got mostly 7s and 8s and even two 6s, the horror.)
Basically I'm trying to say people exaggerate so much about GCSEs. They won't restrict you at all. The only reason they really check is to see if you've got an adequate English and Maths ability, and sometimes to see how you scored on the subjects you're going into, for example checking your sciences if you're going into science. What truly matters is your A-level grades and writing a killer personal statement. My advice is, with love, forget about your GCSEs - you did incredibly as it is and either way it doesn't really matter! Just focus on making your application reflect how impressive you are. Don't let your grades stress you out

Hey! I got 99999999875 and I got 5/5 offers (Oxford, UCL, Warwick, Exeter, Bath). As long as you have a decent amount at 8/9, it doesn't really matter - there's much more emphasis on predicted a level grades and a strong personal statement/interview.

Were you at an independent or state school? Only asking because my teacher says if you go to a private school you can only go to Oxbridge with a minimum of 8 9s 2 8s

I was at a state school in a deprived area, so my grades would’ve been looked at contextually (ie how I did in comparison to everyone else at my school). Your mum is probably right - if you’re receiving that level of education it makes sense that they expect better grades. I have heard that Oxford gives equal weighting to 8s and 9s though (as in they view them as the same grade) but I’m not sure how much truth is behind that?

They care a lot less than you would expect- they do look but an amazing personal statement/ good extracurriculars to write about in it/ being widely read and being able to do well in interviews is way more important

Hi there,

in all honesty, a grade 6 in history will NOT hold you back. What degree are you interested in?

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)

Biological Sciences and I would definitely reccommend looking into supercurriculars because they value them super highly in the applications
