Speech and Language Work Experience

Hi, I'm looking to study MSc Langauge Pathology/Speech and Language Therapy/etc. but I've been scaring myself by reading horror stories on the Internet about how much experience you actually need. My top choice will be Newcastle for Sept 2026 entry and it seems super competitive. I volunteer for a mental health helpline and work in a school already, but does anybody have any other suggestions of work experience? I'm not having much luck applying to or even finding SLTA jobs.

I ideally would really like to avoid working hours if possible too which has been a problem...

I'm actually really getting myself quite worried as I LOVE the course and the career but I don't know if it will love me back!

Thank you!!

Have you managed to gain any shadowing experience with a Speech and Language Therapist?

Nope- I'm trying to get some volunteer work in, but it's tricky because of the way my work pattern is. I've emailed all the SLTs local to me to ask, but they've not replied :frown:
