AI benefits in 3rd year

Hi all,

New to the forum and looking for advice on how I can use AI to help me in my third year of Forensic Science.

Any advice welcome, especially regarding how it can help for a disabled student (autism/ADHD especially!)

Thanks in advance!

Hi there (:
One tool I’ve personally found really helpful, especially as someone who can find long texts a bit overwhelming is using text-to-speech software when reading research papers. I play the audio while reading along visually- it helps me stay more engaged and makes the information easier to absorb. I also find It breaks down that mental barrier of feeling overloaded by blocks of dense academic text! (:

Hiya!

I’d recommend checking whether your university has any guidelines on using AI. With the rise of AI tools, it's becoming increasingly common for students to use them, but it's really important not to rely on them too heavily. Overuse or misuse could result in assignments being flagged for AI involvement or academic misconduct.

That said, AI can be a fantastic resource when used appropriately. Your university's guidelines will help you understand how and when it’s okay to use it. You might also want to see if they offer any workshops or resources to support students in using AI responsibly.

Perhaps it can help with managing your schedule, exploring career options in the forensic science field or interview tips etc 🙂

Best of luck

Hi @Phoenix-Flames,

I'm not a forensic science student myself, but here's a few AI tools I've seen students find useful:
google calendar - great for time-blocking, setting reminders, and managing deadlines in a more visual and structured way
text-to-speech tools - like others have mentioned, these can help if you find reading long chunks of text tiring or hard to focus on
grammarly or quillbot - to support proofreading, especially helpful if you struggle with executive function or working memory when editing.

Best of luck!

Hi There!

You've already had some really good advice, and I would definitely agree that you should check your uni's policy on AI use. Maybe also chat to your personal tutor or academic advisor as they may also have some ideas on the right ways to use AI.

ChatGPT and suchlike did not (quite) exist when I was at uni - however one thing I found very helpful for structuring my references in general was to have a table - 3 columns. Author/year, main arguments, and link to the study online. I'd then colour code each row depending on which which section of my assignment they'd fit (para1/para2/para3 etc).

I also used the filtering tool on Google Scholar to search for articles only from the past 3 years, which was very handy for making sure I got some recent, relevant references.

I would definitely not recommend asking AI to write anything for you. Although you can take a look at how it chooses to structure paragraphs and the length of sentences it uses, and other structural tips, as soon as something is stored in the AI's datacentre it can be picked up by Turnitin, and so you would be at a definite disadvantage for relying too heavily on it!

I hope this helps and best of luck 🙂
