Politics/IR Book Recommendations

Hi! I'm currently in Year 12 and just began writing my personal statement for UCAS (2026 entry). My supervisor has suggested reading a wider range of academic literature and books to build my personal statement and background in political knowledge.

In the context of Politics/IR, I'm particularly interested in European Politics, Human Rights, Global Security, Humanitarian Protection, Liberal/Socialist Political Theory and Feminism.

I will be applying for Cambridge, as well as a variety of Russell Groups and universities in the range of A*AA-AAB. In light of this, I would love to read some thought-provoking and critical literature which would enable me to construct a competitive application.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Hi there, I'm a final year International Relations and Arabic student at SOAS and here are some pieces/ people that I think align with your criteria:

Cynthia Enloe - Bananas, Beaches and Bases

This is a great piece of feminist literature that examines the role of women in international politics.

Richard Falk

An IR and International Law scholar and previous UN Special Rapporteur - lots of his work and speeches align with your interest in human rights and security.

Michael Doyle - Ways of War and Peace: Realism, Liberalism, and Socialism

A good account of classical thinkers.

Mark Dufield - The Liberal Way of Development and the Development—Security Impasse: Exploring the Global Life-Chance Divide

It’s also worth checking out these specialist journals: Global Society, Conflict and Cooperation; Journal of Peace Research (JPR), Security Dialogue and the Journal of International Relations and Development (JIRD).

I hope this helps!
