Violence in LA

"US President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guardsmen to Los Angeles to deal with unrest over raids on undocumented migrants."
Trump orders National Guard to LA after clashes - BBC News

The National Guard are usually only called in by a State Governor. Trump has typically decided he is In Charge of All Things and has thought with small-brain, sending in 2,000 troops - an overreaction by a right-wing state with a clumsy anti-migrant agenda.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the decision "purposefully inflammatory." He posted on X that Trump was deploying the National Guard "not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle". And probably because Trump regards California as a hot-bed of all things left-wing and liberal and wants a public spat.

The gop founder of latinos for trump says the (florida) ice raids/anti immigration isnt what they voted for
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article308111995.html
"A Miami Republican who co-founded the group Latinas for Trump is condemning President Donald Trump’s mass-deportation campaign and blasting recent immigration enforcement actions as harmful.
This is not what we voted for,” State Sen. Ileana Garcia said in a statement on Saturday. “I have always supported Trump, through thick and thin. However, this is unacceptable and inhumane.”

Except its pretty much exactly what trump voters voted for. Just the demagogue language trump used obscured the issues (just) enough to get (some) people angry. Who could have known?

"I have supported Trumps attacks on anything and everything until outrageously he's attacked something relevant to me"

Idiot.

Step 1: have masked agents of the state dressed up like Call of Duty cosplayers snatch people off the street.
Step 2: wait for people to protest.
Step 3: blow the magnitude of the protests entirely out of proportion by using language such as rebellion and insurrection.
Step 4: crack out the military gunships.

Every informed person knew this was going to happen when Trump was re-elected because it is straight out of the authoritarian playbook.

With trump deploying the national guard while at a ufc event and hegseth talking about deploying the marines (some people have commented that its almost been pre-planned / provoked), we can cut to a live feed -

just what he need to distract from his verbal war against Musk

There is also another agenda going on here.
Gavin Newsom is an ambitious Democrat and likely to run for the Presidential nomination.
Trump wants to stifle / discredit him. Newsom sees this as his 'prove himself as a leader' moment.

This morning it appears that Dallas and other cities are also getting tetchy - not all of them Democrat strongholds. Trump does not have a clue how to manage this sort of event apart from bullying. Its going to be an interesting summer.

The california/newsom spat has been going on for a long time, from raking leaves to stop forest fires to turning on the wrong rivers to get unneeded water to the wrong places to now sending in the marines which is about the same level of absurdity.

Its obv been preplanned on the back of blm last term and somewhat like the harvard, smithsonian, kennedy center, media ... spats, its pretty much straight out of the authoritarian playbook. The fact its happening now helps to distract from musk, tariffs, court judgements, ... and allows him to be (self) portrayed as a strong leader by shooting aussie journalists and arresting a couple of dozen "mostly grey haired crowd" at trump tower.

When you look at the actual number of protesters, I think the numbers are around 200-300. It's a massive over reaction!

Would anyone like to comment on this explanation from the US?

I worryingly suspect we've got a matter of days (hours) before the Guard or Marines end up killing someone and all hell breaks loose.

I see people link to various sources but my link to an alternative viewpoint was removed

That's not so much a 'source' as a random guy out of breath walking about a park with a camera voicing his opinion, it in no way compares to say the BBC, LA Times, or NY Post etc and doesn't sound worth discussing tbh.

Tbh, the lapd have had a decent try at that already. The marines/guards are not necessarily overjoyed to be there

But I suspect it would look bad if they killed anyone tomorrow during trumps military parade, so maybe sunday?

"Defense officials said the Pentagon is spending $134 million to deploy 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to respond to protests against federal immigration enforcement in Los Angeles."

And apparently as no-one in the Pentagon was anticipating this Donald Moment, there are no arrangements in place to pay any of the National Guard their daily allowances. Time to down tools guys?

National Guard, Marine deployment in LA costs $134M: Pentagon
