What is A-level economics like?

Hi I'm considering economics A-level, however I've not done it for gcse so I'm not sure if I'll be at a disadvantage... just wondering how other people found it, and also how possible it is to teach the course to yourself if you have bad teaching? Thank you

I've just finished my economics exams for this year and didn't do it for GCSE. Personally I've found it very interesting and its my favourite A level (could be bias cuz I'm doing it at uni lol). I didn't find it too difficult, some of the diagrams can be a bit tricky to understand at first but there are a lot of good videos to help with that. I did OCR so there's not as much resources online as Edexcel/AQA, but I think using the specification/econplus/tutor2u/CGP guide was what helped me most with self-studying/revision.

lmk if you have any questions

The Bank of England actually funded a study on economics students recently. Most people that take Economics at A level didn't take it at GCSE. You're not at a disadvantage at all!

Also, as has already been pointed out, the economics A level is not very technical at all. Econplusdal is a good resource and you can watch his YouTube videos for free. It's a good choice if you're interested in the subject.

Here's the paper if you're interested: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/-/media/boe/files/education/understanding-trends-in-the-study-of-economics.pdf

I had different teachers for my first year and second year and I do think having bad teachers can make it a lot harder to understand topics, as my teachers for my second year were not the best , but as long as you put extra effort in from YouTube / online sources you’ll be able to get a good grade

If anyone is consdiering taking Economics at A- Level i would highly reccomend it. It's a highly relevatn subject to the real wrold, is largely logical and not too technical. Diagrams are a key component however. I just sat my exams in 2025 for Edexcel Econ A level and it was not too bad. I am actually offering tutoring for anyone interested, I want to help others in a subject I really enjoyed so please DM if interested !
