"you're not dumb"

at Uni i said it to a girl (who i like). i was basically trying to compliment her, when i play it back in my head it sounds like i shouldn't of said that and it sounds a bit insulting. Mabye its just me?
Anyway do people think it sounds not right and i should have said "you're clever" (even though that sounds a bit weird in my head aswell)

"you're clever" is classic sarcasm so dont use it, how exactly did you say "you're not dumb"

Yeah that's not the best way to compliment someone on their intelligence lol. Maybe next time you see her, you say something like 'you know when I said you weren't dumb, well what I meant to say was.....' and then finish the sentence. Just apologise, but casually, don't make a huge thing out of it.

your not dumb should have been part of a sentence, not a sentence on its own.
like you could have said
'your going to do to fine in the exam, trust me, your not dum like the others' just an example.
