Flopped UCAS / predicted, Can i get into a good uni by reapplying with A level result

Throughout Year 12 i was quite immature and did not study very hard. I have just finished my UCAS exams, and I'm pretty certain I did poorly (probably going to get predicted Cs and Bs, maybe an A if im lucky). I was planning on taking a gap year after year 13 and apply with my A level results. But I have heard that even if you do well in your A levels and apply with them, a lot of good unis will not accept you. Is this true? I want to go to a uni in London for something to do with economics, my top Unis that I want to aim for are UCL, KCL, Queen Mary university. My other plan is to go through clearing. If i do very well in my A levels, is it likely that I can go to a good university through clearing?

As you are taking a gap year, you can definitely apply after you have your results. It makes sense, especially if you want your offers based in your actual grades rather than predictions. It means you'll get unconditional offers.

One thing to bear in mind is that you'll need to give UCAS your referee's details, so arrange this with your Head of 6th Form before you leave. Get the agreement in an email (CCing your personal email address), so all you have to do is confirm their details before sending off your UCAS application in the Autumn (using the same email trail will save explanations).

I am currently still in year 12, I have just finished my UCAS (year 1 exams), and I am certain my predicted grades are going to be poor. But what your saying is that I still have a decent chance of getting into unis like KCL and UCL if i take a gap year and reapply with my a level results (assuming I get something along the line of A*A*A)?

It all depends on your grades but I don't see why not. When you apply after your results, the university will be evaluating your application based upon what you actually have. The grades are usually primary but they may also look at the rest of your application (GCSEs, extra curricular may help).

Good luck.
Applying with achieved grades is fine. Lots of people take a gap year and unis don’t really mind.

If you go to some Uni Open Days and ask this question you will be reassured that they really do not mind about gap-years - and it would not disadvantage your application.

They can't just increase a predicted from like a C to an A* or an A lol - it reflects badly on them if they don't accurately predict
