UCL or Southampton for engineering?

Hi, I’d just like some thoughts on what is better for engineering? E.g any current students experiences?

What do you mean by 'better'?
And what sort of Engineering?
Hi JibberJam,
You've asked quite a broad question, and the answer really depends on what you're looking for in a university experience.
If you're considering global rankings, UCL is currently ranked 9th in the QS World University Rankings 2025, while Southampton ranks lower but still within the top 100 globally. However, rankings alone don’t tell the full story.
When it comes to specific engineering disciplines especially aerospace, mechanical, and electrical engineering Southampton is very well regarded, with strong industry connections to companies like Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Northrop Grumman.
You should also consider the type of university:

UCL is a city university in central London, offering a more urban experience.

Southampton is a campus university, which can feel more close-knit and student-focused. It really depends on your personal preference.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should look closely at the course content. For example, I was specifically interested in Aerospace Engineering with a focus on Astronautics (space) which isn't offered as an undergraduate course at UCL, but is at Southampton. That played a big role in my decision.
A bit about me: I’ve just finished my third year of Aerospace Engineering at Southampton, and the course has been everything I hoped for. We've done a lot of hands-on, practical work, especially around space systems, and I was able to secure a placement with a well-known company thanks to the university’s industry links.
But before you make your application a few things to consider

Your course (what you would like to do)

Does campus matter to you

Do you want to do a course that is offered at the University

What do you want to get out of your degree?

Hope that helps!
