Hey all, getting involved at university is a key benefit of going to a university - beyond just a degree - be it being a part of a sports team or society, on a student committee, part-time work in the university, through being a student ambassador and even a research scholarship or internship!
Or... by volunteering in India for 3 weeks over Easter!
That's exactly what I started doing this time two months ago, and I'm going to tell you all about it.
So, first of all, it was definitely something not to be taken lightly, as it is a big commitment to make in terms of time, effort and emotionally, too. But it for sure was worth it, to not only see somewhere very new and different, but experience and volunteer there too - something you can't get unless you really want to make the most of your time at university.
Before getting to India though, fundraising was step one - a charity style clothes sale here, a bake sale there and posting a link to the fundraiser everywhere! Then there was the team-building, where the Global Hope Team - 'Team India' - went to Hope's Plas Caerdeon campus in Wales to get to know each other ahead of being with each other in New Delhi for 3 weeks!! In Plas we did a bit of archery, got information on what to expect during our 3 weeks, and was well fed along the way.
The packing list was extensive, plenty of clothes, travel stuff, suncream and bug spray was needed for sure. But after getting through 4 airports, 3 flights and many hours of being sat down - there I was, in the capital of India, New Delhi, for 3 weeks.
The first few days were all about settling in, getting used to where we're staying and seeing a few sights, including Humayun's Tomb and India Gate as well as the markets! It was such a vibrant experience, vibrant yet complicated.
The following week was mainly university outreach and meeting the partners we were working with, as well as learning about India in a few lectures along with how education and social work happens in India.
Then it was the weekend and - of course I had to do it - it was time to go to Agra see the Taj Mahal!!!
Finally, the rest of the time we were there was working with an NGO based in New Delhi, which included working with kids that were a part of extra school classes - a definite highlight and what we all agreed was the main reason why we were there in the first place! I introduced a couple of them to International Relations, naturally, given that's what I study!!
And after all that, some amazing experiences, food, vibes and good work, I've now been back in Liverpool for a month and a bit.
Would I do it all again - YES!!!
Hopefully, this could inspire anybody reading to get involved beyond their degree, just get involved!!
All the best wishes for the future,
Harry
