PhD after Biomedical Sciences???

Hi, so I just finished my second year of Biomed and I'm about to go into my third year.
Honestly, I don't really enjoy the degree but I don't hate it.
The main problem is I don't really know what I would do after I graduate.
My mum suggests to apply for a PhD in the field but I don't think I would want to continue in this field
I've grown in interest in marketing/business so I would want to take my postgraduate in that direction.

How hard is it to apply for a PhD after you've finished your bachelors? It is better to do a masters after your bachelors first?

Hi there,

It’s completely normal to feel uncertain about your next steps, especially if you’re not fully enjoying your degree or unsure about continuing in the same field.

From my experience applying for PhDs, all universities do require you to have a master’s degree, or at least significant research or industry experience in the relevant field. A master’s is a big step up from undergrad and really helps you develop key skills like critical thinking, independent research, academic writing, and even preparing work for publication. You also need to submit a strong research proposal when applying for a PhD, and that’s something a master’s prepares you well for.

If you’re not passionate about the subject, I wouldn’t recommend going straight into a PhD. It’s a long and demanding commitment, often 4–7 years, and you’ll need genuine interest in the field to stay motivated.

Since you’re leaning towards marketing or business, it might be worth looking into postgraduate conversion courses in those areas. A master’s in marketing, business, or management could open up a whole new path and help you build the skills and network for a career you’re more excited about.

Hope this helps!
