How to take a Gap Year on a budget? (travelling, internships, part-time) Alevels2025

I am taking a gap year after A Levels 2025 because of international student status and will enrol in 2026. I'm planning to do a combination of travelling, internships and part-time work. Based on my A-Levels so far, I think(?) I will meet my deferred requirements so I am not as worried about retakes etc but would love to advance my CV if possible. If anyone can give someone can give advice on any of these, I would be really grateful, whether that be your past experience or something you're planning to do. If you're also taking a gap year, feel free to pm me so we can connect!

Travelling:
I've kind of ruled out "gap year travel programs" because they usually take up 3+ months/a full term and cost £10k+. My parents are vaguely supportive of me travelling a bit, but are definitely not going to agree to paying for my whole trip. I hope to go on a few short spontaneous trips (most Europe, maybe Asia once) throughout the year, to attend some international conferences, etc. I've been looking at some full-ride scholarships or study trips abroad but they either require a degree/university affiliation or are not financially inclusive enough. Can anyone recommend some programs you have come across that are budget-friendly (around £300 per trip, not very realistic I know), whether that be academic/study-related or just gap year travel??

Internships:
I know that there are many existing internships/work placements in London, but because I am looking at engineering-related fields, they mostly require a degree or at least university affiliation which I don't yet have because I'm not in uni yet. I've found a few possible internships in similiar fields, but am unsure whether I'll get accepted. My ideal engineering internship for a gap year is one that lasts around 1-3 months/a term, can be abroad or local, preferably a little technical (as in I don't want to work in a non-engineering job at an engineering company), preferably paid but I am definitely open to unpaid opportunities. What I definitely cannot afford is an internship that I have to pay for as the intern, or internships that last through the entire gap year and through summer 2026. Tbh at this point I am only looking for a free short-term internship in STEM that will take a freshly-graduated A Level student. Can someone recommend some internships that align with these preferences??

Part-time work:
In between travelling and internships, I want to take on some part-time jobs around London. I know that minimum-wage jobs usually require you to be in work around a few times a week for many months, but I hope to look for some jobs where I can work for a few weeks and stop, so I can balance my other plans. I don't have strong preferences in what kind of work I want, just probably a job that's safe and not with unreasonable hours. I want to earn some money for my travels/shopping for uni/socials but I am not looking for an especially well paid job (maybe just a little bit above minimum wage). In particular, I would prefer a job with employee perks or a job that I can do with friends (so like to be hired alongside my friend), whether that be a barista job or retail. Most importantly it just has to be a job where there is a fixed short-term contract so I can leave after 3 weeks-a month or so. I've looked on Indeed but I think they only have permanent contracts so far. Could someone recommend some jobs for a gap year student, preferably short-term contracts!

Finally, if anyone who has taken or will be taking a gap year has any suggestions for hobbies for me to take up, definitely let me know! I really want this year to be utilized well, whether for myself or my career. Currently, I am looking at Youth Orchestras, starting a small business and perhaps picking up a sport. If you're taking a gap year from September 2025 too, feel free to let me know so we can connect or share experiences! Thank you guys!

hi Maryam! sorry I've only just saw this -- how is it going? For me I haven't done anything I listed so I'm kind of lost haha.. I tried with the internships and jobsearching but didn't get anything at all. I've got my deferred offer for Bristol but my grades weren't particularly impressive so I'm thinking of retaking a few subjects just to keep myself updated w the content etc (very pricey to resit as a private candidate I've realised 🥲). Aside from this I genuinely have nothing going on (im quite worried tbh) and dk if I'll even afford to travel at all... hope yours is going better though!!

Hello! Aww it's a shame you didn't get anywhere, but definitely don't feel worried! I mean unless anyone is pressuring you to do something then worst case scenario you just do nothing for a year and go to uni anyway which is a better position than some people are in.

Jobs are definitely hard to get but I would give it time. I was looking all through September and then I was made an offer but it didn't start till November. Have you gotten any interviews or anything? If you still want part time work, usually most places need extra help over the holidays so I would maybe keep an eye out.

If not have you tried tutoring on the side? Even just GCSE tutoring online is often a great way for students to develop lots of skills and it's better money than most other jobs. I'm tutoring alongside working at it is tiring tbh but it's good money and experience and I enjoy it most of the times.

I think travel on gap years is overrated, I don't really want to go anywhere lol. I'm quite a homebody, hoping I can read some good books, maybe do some first year pre reading. Other than that I'm just building anticipation for first year uni which I also think is fine.

You could always pick up a hobby or skill and spend time doing that if you have time to kill! I also really want to get my license this year, even though I don't have too much time anymore lol, but that's something you could focus on if you haven't already.

You still have lots of time to have a great gap year! Try and not compare urself to others, whatever experiences you have are valuable just because they're yours, it's all about mindset. Let me know what you get up to xx

Hi Maryam! hopefully the new job is going well! I haven't yet found a job but I've secured an overseas exchange program in Asia during the holidays so that'll probably be the highlight of my year haha.. When I come back, I'll have to do a deep dive into the job market again. I'm planning to apply to be a tutor on some websites and hopefully get some tutees, and I've also decided to start selling handmade jewelry, it's not much, but it feels nice to have control over something and possibly earn something on the side. same with wanting to get a license, as well as some other hobbies like language learning. at this point, I'm more focused on growing mentally than my cv (since a job seems really far away), I think I'll be quite happy with just a few new skills by next August. Also planning to redo some A-Levels, to keep myself from forgetting the content and aim for a better grade etc. Thank you for replying to my comments!! It feels reassuring not having to compare with other people all the time. Best of luck in everything and keep me updated xx

Hi! Thanks for your kind words. Working is really tiring but I'm grateful for it, it allows me to save up and everything. Congrats on securing that exchange program, hopefully it'll be great, and selling jewelery sounds so fun as well. I'm sure it'll teach you lots of skills on the side as well. Keeping yourself busy is the best thing, that's what I'm trying to do as well. After all, any job you get now probably wouldn't be too beneficial to your CV anyway compared to opportunities you could have at uni, so keeping on top of knowledge and also taking time for yourself to relax and refresh from like all the years of being on a hamster wheel (at least that's what high school felt like to me lol) is also super important. Wishing you well!!
