y12s/13s - questions from a y11 about 6th form

I'm starting y12 in september and was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions I have about sixth form! Thank you

1. Is it better to have a laptop, ipad or make written notes? (I’m taking maths so not a laptop for that but for something like geography what do people tend to use/ prefer?)
2. What note-taking apps do people use on laptops/ ipads? Surely not Word as you’d have so many docs..
3. How many hours of work do you have to put in per week for an a-level? I’m sure it varies depending on the subject/tests though!
4. What is homework like? At gcse we’ve had a lot of pointless homework… is A-level the same or does it actually really matter?
5. What equipment e.g. folders do people recommend getting?
6. Honestly any other advice or what you wish you had/ did!

Heyy Yr12 here:dance: Doing geo, psychology, art

1.

I do geography and I use a laptop and written notes cuz I've not got an ipad, but if I had an ipad I would use an ipad, since its easier to write and edit stuff

2.

Google docs, organise it in google drive and make folders so its not too messy

3.

When i started year 12 I did no work like no work, do not recommend, it only adds more stress on you. Now i do on average from 1 hour 30 to 3 hours? Sometimes I do more if im feeling motivated

4.

Not much hw tbh, you do have to do wider reading like read articles, and organise notes and make them more detailed, like using essay plans to make revision more easy. Also do note writeups at the end of each topic, I did my note writeups at the end of year 12, like near end of year exams, and that was very rushed, and left not much time for revision. If you do maths or sciency subjects, or just any subject in general, do past papers often, practice practice practice
i'm kinda going off a tangent, but in the end of yr 12 in some subjects you'll get introduced to a NEA, its A LOT of work, so a lot to do over the Yr12 to yr13 summer holidays

5.

A big folder / ring binder to store notes and pages at home, a small folder to being to school, lined paper for school. I like using notebooks for lessons and sticking worksheets and stuff in, feels like scrapbooking and makes learning more fun

6.

If you do an EPQ, make sure you STICK TO YOUR PLAN, you'll learn about the plan later, but don't completely abandon it like i did/do, work on it like every week
Start looking at what universities you like early, like at yr 12 feburary to march ish, because by the end of yr 12, theres like NEAs and EPQs and mocks and personal statements, introduction to a lot of new stuff. Doing stuff early puts less stuff on ur plate later

btw how are your GCSEs going?🤔

1.

It's technically personal preference, but I found that basically everyone switched from written notes to ipad (usually with laptop as another device) in the first month of year 12.

2.

Onenote, any word processor (MS office, Libreoffice, Onlyoffice, Openoffice, etc), maybe Obsidian but I only use it for personal things. Depending on how much work you save, you might have a lot of documents.

3.

In year 12 you can get by just doing work in school as long as you understand the content. Your test results should guide you on how much work you personally need to do really.

4.

Depends on school but in my experience, it's reasonable. It might be worse if you're taking essay subjects (harder to cheat).

5.

Keep a few pens, a few pencils, the usual really. In terms of calculators, I recommend the (Casio) fx-991EX but you might have to settle for the inferior, uglier, newer model. A worthwhile investment for me was getting a massive whiteboard on a wall in my room, it's so nice especially for maths.

6.

If you actually pay attention in lessons and do the questions you find useful in them (ignore textbook questions imo), you should be fine. 90% of the necessary theory for some subjects can be found on PMT or some other website, being confident in your analysis and problem solving is usual more important than memorising (depending on the subject), although for cramming I'd still recommend just reading notes. For maths your only real option for revising is doing a lot of practice/exam questions. I found madasmaths the most useful website for this.

1. It’s personal preference. I used both, but I think a laptop is easier for typing but ipad easier to carry.
2. I just used PowePoint LOL
3. in yr 12, I’d say roughly three hours outside of school everyday.
4. Yeah, half of the time it is pointless but depends on the subject. Eg, for English Lit, most of the homework was analysing ours books.
5. Folders is a must! All the usual stationary is good.
6. I wish someone told me to relax a bit more in yr12. I was in the library all of my frees in yr12 for my free periods with my friends and I wish I took things a little less seriously BUT still revise, your 12 predicted grades are very important for applying to Uni. When ur applying to uni, make sure u research ur course bc you can have different courses at different unis eg. Just LLB Law one uni or Law with forensics at another. But have fun yr12 was one of the best years for me!!

Thank you both!

To be honest for me I think an iPad is better for stem subjects etc as it’s much easier to make notes for those subjects as on a computer it’s a lot more difficult to

1, i would recommend written notes but again it is personal preference, i feel like hand written notes stick in my memory a lot more , if i use a latop or ipad i feel like i am just endless writing without taking much in .
2,N/A
3, i would say 2 hours on top off your homework each day is enough and maybe a but more on the weekends also depends if you take 4 subjects, and when mocks come round i have mock period rn like i have had 7 exams now 1 more left fir Thursday i would do 5-6 hours each day.
4, homework is a lot more precise mostly exam questions for maths and sciences testing your knowledge and understanding form content in lesson.
5, mainly a folder if you gone do written notes, and lots of lined paper as they don't provide books anymore
6,um start revising form day 1 dont only start revising content ones the mocks start approaching, do little by little each day until mocks makes mocks much easier

hii thank you! art sounds like a nightmare... what do you want to do at uni?
I'm definitely doing geo, econ and maths (possibly an extra subject too, considering fm but that's hardd or a language)
GCSEs have gone pretty well so far! Bio paper 2 was a bit of a let down ☹️ most of the paper was ecology and there was no homeostasis which was a bit of a surprise... I've got 9 exams left!
Again thank you for your advice!

I see a lot of sixth formers using ipad/laptops, do you use those at school?

hii! For art as long as you know where your project is going and you know what ur doing u should be fine
I want to study psychology at uni , don't know which uni to go to yet
Honestly 3 subjects already is a lott of work, so unless you want to challenge yourself, do 4 subjects. Otherwise do 3. Most universities look at your best 3 subjects anyway so the 4th doesn't really matter.
Omg biology GCSE🫨 last year we got a question on mitosis (edexcel bio) and I've never been happier in my life loll

for use you don't have to have it, it is personal choice if you want to use one in lesson for notes and stuff and if we are doing anything online we have 2 whole dedicated big room full off computers to use just for us.

our 2024 aqa papers for biology last year where mean, the 5 markers where cruel, and yes the second paper had like a lot of confusing questions about like peat bogs and a lot of ecology and we had a 6 marker in the second paper to do with maths and i dont know why everyone in my biology argree the bio maths questions are allways so hard i wasn't able to do the one in the gcse paper
