Waitlisted For MSc Speech and Language Therapy

Hi everyone,

I had my interview yesterday for the MSc Speech and Language Therapy course at City St George’s, University of London. I thought it went well and was hopeful I’d receive a conditional offer, as I haven’t completed my undergraduate degree yet but I’m on track to achieve a 2:1 by the end of this academic year.

However, I received an email this morning saying that I’ve been placed on the waiting list.

I’m quite gutted as this isn’t the first time it’s happened. A similar situation occurred with another university I applied to earlier in the year, I was waitlisted in April and then offered again to be on their September waiting list. At the time, I didn’t think I had much of a chance, so I chose not to accept the offer. I later applied to City for the same course, and now I’ve been waitlisted again.

Right now, I’m feeling uncertain about what to do. I can start applying for jobs again, but my heart is really set on getting onto this course.

Is there anything I can do at this point to improve my chances? Has anyone else been in a similar situation and actually received an offer after being waitlisted? I’d really appreciate hearing any advice or success stories.

Thanks in advance!

SLT / lecturer here.

Realistically no. If you have already been interviewed and been waitlisted there is nothing else you can realistically do this cycle. It will just come down to other people not meeting their offer or taking up their place.

If you did want to do things now it would support your application for next year if you don't end up with a place. The most obvious thing that is within your control is to finish your course / graduate to meet your own conditions. Gaining more knowledge about SLT or work experience etc. cannot hurt and will make the transition to being a student easier.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I am hoping to finish my course this month and then once I get my certificate I will hopefully be able to send that across to the admissions team (need to double check the process for this). Whatever the outcomes are, there are benefits in it for me but I just really hope I get cleared a space! Thanks a lot once again

Hey, I'm in the same position. Had my interview in May and was sent an email two days later that I'm wait listed. Would really like to know where I stand since if I'm on the course I need to hand in my notice to my employer in less than a month...

I got waitlisted for a masters when I applied (was Sheffield) and in the end I decided to apply for an alternative BSc course despite it being slightly after the UCAS deadline (my reference was being a bit slow and doing it as a massive favour as I was a mature student so I didn't want to be pushy) and got offered onto a BSc route instead.

Yes I'd have loved a Masters as I already have a degree - but when I weighed it up between taking another year out to build up my CV a bit more and reapply for a 2 year course, or just doing a second bachelors degree and still coming out into employment at the same point in time - plus the fact I would have been pushing the limits of travelling to Sheffield, I went for the BSc route and in hindsight I'm really glad I did as the pandemic landed, placements were disrupted and the course structure for the BSc just worked out better for the way the placement disruption timed for everyone.

So just to say, don't forget that it's not "masters or nothing" if you've already got an undergrad degree - you can access student finance funding just the same for a second degree if it's an Allied Health pre-reg course (I'd already actually paid off my first very old style student loan - I did my original degree back in the days of student grants!) and it might be worth keeping your eye on clearing or out of timescale applications - I know my course were, quote "always open for promising candidates" and clearly if you've got waitlisted for a masters you are that... and at the end of the day, once you finish, the only thing employers really look for is that you've got your HCPC registration in place and no one even actually ever asked my final degree classification!

Hi there! 😊
I know how stressful the waiting stage can feel.
While there unfortunately isn’t much you can do to actively “improve your chances” once you’ve been placed on the waiting list for the MSc Speech & Language Sciences programme, you’re definitely not alone, and it’s great that you’re being proactive.
If you have any specific questions about your application or want clarification, I’d really recommend reaching out directly through the Contact Admissions form: 👉 https://www.citystgeorges.ac.uk/prospective-students/apply/contact They’re super helpful and best placed to give you updates.
And just to reassure you, if things don’t go your way this time, don’t lose heart! You’re absolutely welcome to apply again for a future intake. The 2025/2026 cycle isn’t open just yet, but it will be later this year.
Wishing you the very best of luck! Feel free to reach out again if you have any other questions 💬

Hiya,

I was also waitlisted, however this was on my second round of applications (I was unsuccessful my first year and was not waitlisted at any of the places I interviewed at). I did receive an offer some time after, and I am now a practicing speech and language therapist.

At this stage, unfortunately there is nothing you can do to change the outcome of this application cycle - but whether you are successful or not, you can reapply next cycle, and I would encourage you to do so if you are unsuccessful and really want this. I think failing and then trying again with a better understanding made me a better speech and language therapist in the long run.

Keep us posted, I hope you have good news 🙂 But if not, feel free to reach out if you wanted any advice on strengthening your application next time around. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the info. When you were waitlisted, when was it that you actually received an offer do you remember what month it was?

I had a look at my email for you, it was the beginning of July. I'm not sure how helpful that is though, I know admissions decisions can vary drastically year to year and can be earlier or later by a wide margin. I will keep my fingers crossed for good news for you, I know the wait is horrible.

Hi, I have applied for Msc at City St Georges and was wondering if you could provide me with some interview tips, as I am quite nervous, just a general idea of some of the questions that they may ask.

Would be greatly appreciated

Thank you!!
