Injured myself at work and don't qualify for SSP

Hello everyone it's my first ask here.
I'm a student at Northumbria university and it's currently summer so my course isn't running at the moment.
I injured myself at work and tore the ligaments in my knee and have been told I'm off work for atleast 3-4 weeks MINIMUM.

My employer has advised me that I don't qualify for statutory sick pay and I'm unsure of what I can do whilst off work in terms of paying for groceries/rent.

I'd say call Citizens Advice or similar to see what support may be available. I don't know how SSP works but I would imagine its possible your employer is wrong. If not, then perhaps other government support is available. CA would be able to walk you through that or any other similar options. I'm assuming family support is not an option, but maybe it is
