Oxford colleges for History

Hi, I'm an international student hoping to get into Oxford for history

I don't know much about the colleges - I was wondering if there are any that are more known for history?

And also if there are any that have a higher likelihood of getting into? (I know none of them are necessarily 'easier' but I have heard that ones like Chirst Church get way more applications than others and therefore have lower chances of getting accepted)

And just what are the general vibes of each college, and the perspectives on them
If anyone could help that would be great

There’s no need to worry about some colleges being harder to get in. They reallocate candidates to make sure that your college choice doesn’t affect your chances of getting a place. So if you apply to an oversubscribed college, your chances of getting into that college are lower but not your chances of getting into Oxford.

Also colleges don’t really specialise in subjects (assuming they offer that subject) so any college which offers history will be good at it - after all, you sit the same exams and attend the same lectures regardless.

Other factors you might like to consider when choosing a college:

Do you prefer to be somewhere really central or somewhere a bit further out but with more green space?

How important is it to be on site for 3 years (as opposed to being in an annexe further out - which may have better catering facilities so isn’t necessarily a bad thing)

Do you prefer the idea of a larger college or a smaller one?

Do you like the idea of being surrounded by ancient buildings or do you not mind? (Bear in mind, ancient buildings are beautiful but less likely to have mod cons like en-suite bathrooms)

Other practical considerations like do you care about having a library that’s open 24/7?

All colleges are great at creating loyalty and nearly everyone feels attached to their college wherever they end up so don’t worry too much about it. If you can’t decide you can also do an open application and let the computer pick for you.

I would go through and see what the tutors at each college focus on as tutorials are often taught by your college tutors. Pick the college who's tutors align with your interests. As stated, a more competitive college lowers your chance of acceptance into that college, not into the university.
That all being said, relocations are frequent and your degree is from oxford, not from the college, so i wouldnt place too much emphasis on it.

St. John's, Wadham, Hertford, Exeter and Univ are all colleges with excellent libraries and full 3 year's accommodation as well. 🙂

Take a look at: "The Oxford University Alternative Prospectus" 😉
