clearing

when applying through clearing are you able to negotiate offers for a course with year in industry or gap yr before your course

Some universities will not recruit to deferred entry through clearing. If you’re planning a gap year then you are expected to reapply.

Courses with a placement year will be specifically advertised if they have vacancies.

Its very rare for any Unis to offer 2026 places in Clearing.
The whole point of Clearing is to fill spaces for this year,

And no, you can't 'negotiate' - the Unis will state what they want and you will just be wasting everyone's time if you try to mess them about. And that's time where the clock is ticking on places where you do meet the entry requirements.
I'd also bear in mind that the majority of clearing calls are to temporary staff, not anyone with authority to make decisions on courses or year of entry. They're likely just a student with a script and a list of courses available for this year.

Hi @Dolu07,

Thank you for your message 😊

Universities may offer some flexibility, but this will depend on the course and the institution.

Some universities offer both standard and placement (sandwich) versions of the same course. You may be able to express a preference during the Clearing call, or in some cases, switch once you're enrolled. Although, do bear in mind that this is not always guaranteed 🚨.

Most universities don’t offer deferred entry through Clearing, as the idea is to fill free spaces for the current year. However, a few might allow it depending on course demand, so it’s always worth asking when you speak to them.

The best thing to do is to contact the institutions you're interested in directly and ask. Their Admissions or Clearing teams will be happy to let you know what’s possible and guide you through your options.

I hope that this helps! What courses are you considering?

Best wishes,

Hello there,
At Coventry University you can apply to any one of our courses with industry years or even some integrated masters through clearing if they are listed on our clearing website and we have a wide range of courses each year. However if you want to take a gap year you must reapply as we do not offer clearing places for 2026 until they open for everyone in the Summer of 2026.

Hope this helps

In the past most universities would not consider making an offer of a deferred entry place via clearing But things have changed recently changed .My estimate is about 50 -60% of universities are willing to consider make a deferred entry to a clearing applicant ... for example last years deferred recruitment figures were Manchester Univ 35, Oxford Brookes 31 Nottingham Trent 66 but at other institutions there was a definite policy of no deferred clearing entry e.g Queen Mary, Durham Most universities dont have clearing deferred entry policy details on their website clearing pages so you may need to contact institutions direct, before the 14th, to get deferred recruitment information if there are certain universities that you might want to contact on exam results day. Also as someone has already mentioned if you phone a clearing helpline on exams results day the call adviser may not be able to answer the Q.do you offer deferred entry clearing Some universities may ask you to submit a request with details about your gap year via email for deferred entry consideration
