Returning to education, Essex degree or HNC at Coventry?

I’m 25 and have been working since leaving college. I decided to return to education in my field of catering/hospitality. I’m faced with the choice between doing a full 3 year degree at Uni of Essex or doing a HNC qual at Coventry Uni

I consider Coventry purely for the idea that I’m unsure what going back into education after a few years away might be overwhelming and so a HNC qual is only a year commitment

I consider Essex as they market themselves very well and make it seem like a very appealing place to live and study, obviously the full degree is more valuable but as mentioned it may end up being to much?

I’m unable to visit Essex to see it as it’s 4 hours away from me, I will be visiting Coventry to get an idea of the place

Any thoughts on what I’ve written and info on both Uni’s is much appreciated

Hello there,
I would highly recommend Coventry University for anyone looking to study especially if the course is a highly practical one. We specialise in providing crucial experience, hands on time and contact hours with all of our students. Our campus is incredibly well connected by road or by train to Birmingham and London if you want to travel into big cities on days off/weekends. We have loads of things to see and do in the city centre and places to eat and hang out with friends. All our staff are incredibly friendly and we offer a wide range of societies to help you integrate easily back into student lifestyle and education. I cannot recommend an open day enough to truly get a feel for the course and so you can ask real students and lecturers about the details of your course.

Hello @Adam.dsk 👋

It is exciting that you are thinking about returning to education after working so hard. If you are interested in studying Events Management, Hospitality Management or International Tourism Management, consider Edge Hotel School at the University of Essex 🎓️

The UK’s first hotel school of its kind, based in Wivenhoe House Hotel, has luxury facilities: 40 rooms, a brasserie restaurant, and conference and events function hosting over 300 events and 50 weddings annually. Our students won the EMCup the annual competition between the best European Hospitality Management Schools as first-time competitors 🏆️🌟

Work experience is heavily integrated into the degree: on hotel weeks you will be working real shift patterns (four or five shifts per week) with the team and other students. Our relationships with partners (such as Hilton, Leonardo Hotels, Marriott, The o2, the BRIT Awards) create opportunities to work and network with highly regarded businesses. Experiencing dealing with real customers, events and working demands will further develop those practical skills find out how we can help your career 💼🤝

It's great to hear that Essex is appealing to you. The University of Essex is just outside of Colchester, less than one hour away from London on the train (with three stations near to campus). Our Students' Union is amazing (top 10 in the UK), with over 165 societies to join, a library (open 24/7), gym and sports centre (free if you live on campus), cinema, two bars and a nightclub on campus. Students are supported by the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service and we are now ranked 29th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport table. 🌟

If you are not able to visit Essex on our Open Days, you can explore our campus virtually 💻️

You can chat to current students on Unibuddy to find out more! 📱

I hope this helps, please let us know if you have any more questions 😊
