Gcse grades to get into medicine - please help!!!

Hello everyone

Please help. I’m in year 10 and I’ve achieved mostly 5’s and 6 in my year 10 mocks so I’m quite deflated

I desperately want to get into medicine. I’d love to hear from students who got into medicine and what kind of GCSE grades they achieved please. I’m worried I’ll need all 8’s and 9’s and simply won’t stand a chance any lower grades

I’m really going to work hard but I’d love to get some feedback from medical students please

Thank you x

Hi
Can I say you have a long time to change your grades, So start this summer ( don't forget to give yourself a couple of weeks break).

for science, geo, history,RS, do seneca or cognito
for math do questions ( what helped is YouTube has teachers going through questions in every topic)
then start PMT website doing questions on topics
2 to 3 month before the exams do past papers.

About your question, then don't worry there are people getting offers with 6,7,8 combination grades . check minimum requirements which differ from some univs, but if you get 7 and above then hopefully most univs are open to you.

only some univs wants full 8 and 9 and those are oxbridge and another 2 or 3 but most want 7 or 6 depending on univs.

So as you can see there are a lot of options , but as I told you . you have a lot of time to go.

Good luck

You do not need all 8/9s for medicine. These grades are for Oxbridge and London uni's, but you get the same medicine degree at the end of every university as they are all accredited the same by the GMC.
Aim for minimum 7s, a couple 6s won't destroy you, but you of course want the highest grades possible.

You can also look into applying strategically, meaning you apply to universities that care less about GCSEs and maybe care more about something like the UCAT/ a good personal statement. Basically, pick your strengths and weaknesses in your application, then pick the uni's that match these.

Worst case scenario (isn't all that bad) you get rejected, then you apply again the next year, just to be rejected again. This hopefully won't happen, but you could always go through graduate entry, do a biological degree first, then get into medicine. This is harder to get into medicine through than just undergraduate, but it is still possible.

Very best of luck, any more questions about anything, I'll be happy to answer

Hi!

I am a current 4th year medical student at the University of Leicester so I thought I would offer some advice! You definitely don't need all 8s/9s, but your GCSEs are important. The most important are of course maths and English, as most medical schools will have a minimum grade requirement for these. The uni of Leicester chooses who to invite for an interview based on your GCSE grades and your UCAT exam results (an exam you will take after year 12 if you decide to apply for medicine).

I would recommend having a look at the medical school council website (https://www.medschools.ac.uk/) as they have detailed information about the requirements of each medical school, including GCSEs.

Try not to get too stressed out about your mock grades. I also didn't do as well as I wanted in mocks but my actual results were much better - you have plenty of time to improve. Of course work hard, but make sure you are taking breaks and having fun as well. Please do let me know if you have any other questions about medicine, or university in general!
