Hi @Adam.dsk

I studied Tourism Management for my undergraduate degree and can share a few tips to help with your decision.

When comparing courses, it’s worth looking beyond rankings and focusing on industry links and practical experience. Hospitality and tourism are hands-on industries, so it really helps if the university partners with hotels, venues, or tourism boards especially if you're aiming for the luxury sector (4-5 star hotels, for example).

Many of my coursemates gained part-time experience during their studies in roles like reception, admin, and food & beverage, which helped them transition into more specialist roles after graduation things like event coordination or wedding planning. A degree won’t guarantee a job, but it can help you progress more quickly, especially if paired with placements or relevant work experience.

Accreditation is also worth checking. It’s not essential, but it can open doors. For example, I know that Northampton’s course is accredited by the Tourism Management Institute (TMI), which gives students access to a national network of events, consultancy projects, and conferences. I was part of a working group during my degree and got to attend industry events, write blogs, and even work with a destination management organisation great for building a professional network early.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with choosing the right course for you! 🙂

Hi @Adam.dsk,

To echo what the other responses have said, it’s worth looking further into what the different universities and courses offer, depending on what is important to you.

Key areas to focus on might be:
· Whether there is an industry-focused approach
· The level of personalised academic support
· Class sizes depending on your preference
· How practical the courses are or are they exam-based
· Career support available alongside teaching
· Whether there are placements, structured work experience or a year in industry so you can build experience before you graduate

Good luck with your application and please ask if you’d like more detail about any of the hospitality, events, or tourism-related courses at University of Staffordshire.

We offer undergraduate courses all designed with employability at the core, including, BA (Hons) Visitor Attraction and Resort Management, BSc (Hons) Business Management (Tourism), and BSc (Hons) Business Management (Events).
