part time job

I hope you're doing well! I recently got two job offers from the university, one as a student staff member and another as a cleaner for 13 weeks, and I’m not sure which one to choose. I was wondering if you or anyone you know has experience with either of these jobs. I’d really appreciate your thoughts on which job might be better in terms of flexibility, pay, and how it fits around studies.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi @amentimerga

Based on what you’ve shared, it sounds like the student staff member role is designed for students, so it may offer more flexibility, especially if it's a zero-hours contract (meaning you can choose when to take shifts). That said, the cleaner job, being fixed for 13 weeks, might offer more predictable hours and pay.

It really depends on your course schedule if you don’t have too many fixed contact hours (e.g. labs or placements), you might even be able to do both. Definitely check your university’s guidance on how many hours you're allowed to work during term time. Personally, I’ve managed up to 25 hours a week, but I’d recommend sticking to around 15–20 hours if you want to keep a good study–work balance.

Hope that helps you weigh it up a bit!

Student staff member, I have no experience working for a university specifically but cleaning is a (to put it very politely) extremely unpleasant job
