EPQ in Architecture

I am currently in my first year of college and I'm about to start an EPQ. I would like to study architecture in university though i am already aware i wouldn't be able to join a main campus due to my predicted grades (Graphic Communication: B, Computer Science: B, Maths: C) as most university's require AAA. Does anyone have any advise for what i could write my EPQ about, or if taking an EPQ would be a good idea at all.

Hi @T_JR3s3arch

If you feel you can manage the extra workload alongside your A-levels, doing an EPQ could be a really valuable addition especially for a subject like architecture. Some universities may consider lowering entry requirements (e.g. from AAA to AAB) if you do well in your EPQ, and it can also boost your UCAS points.

For example, our BA (Hons) Architecture course at LJMU accepts both grade-based and UCAS tariff-based entry: ABB–AAB or 128–136 UCAS points: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2025/30132-architecture-ba-hons

An EPQ also gives you a great opportunity to explore a topic related to architecture in more depth and to show your interest and motivation in your personal statement. Plus, it demonstrates key skills like research, independent thinking, and academic writing all of which are useful at university level.

You also have the option to do a creative artefact rather than a written report, which might suit you well given your A-Level in Graphic Communication. That could even contribute towards your portfolio. You can find more information on preparing a portfolio here: https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/applicant-login/portfolios

Wishing you the best of luck with whatever you choose to do and don’t let predicted grades hold you back. You can still apply to universities with higher entry requirements alongside some realistic and safer options, giving yourself a range of possibilities 🙂
