Applying to Nursing and Midwifery at the same university?

Is it possible, say for Universities of Bradford, Leeds or Huddersfield, to apply to a Midwifery degree using a personal statement centered around midwifery but then also, just because midwifery can be quite competitive, to use the 4th and 5th options for those universities again but applying to Adult Nursing? Would the applications be treated independently or could it impact your chances of getting into either course because Nursing and Midwifery are quite closely linked yet quite distinct which the Uni might interpret as you're not 100% certain/ passionate about what you want to do?

I would strongly not recommend you do two separate things like midwifery and adult nursing. Your personal statement has to be solely dedicated to say midwifery if you want to be a midwife similar for adult nursing, two identical personal statements is not recommended 😭 😭 😭.

The university will look at your personal statements and say " this person is not really involved in doing either because of applying for two at the same time" ,

I would strongly recommend that you solely concentrate on either doing midwifery or adult nursing not both together.

Your chance of getting a offer for a interview is basically none of you decide to put in two identical personal statements for adult nursing and midwifery.

I would strongly concentrate on the one degree to have a good chance of getting a potential interview with a view of getting a offer of a place ☺️ ☺️.
At worst the university may offer you an alternative option like adult nursing which you don't have to accept but I would strongly taking it just because you might not have a chance of midwifery if you reapply the following year in which time you could have your first year complete and you could always ask the university if it's possible to transfer to midwifery at end of first year of adult nursing but baring in mind you might not get it.

Ah so essentially applying to both midwifery and adult nursing with a personal statement on midwifery would just ruin my chances of getting into either course at that uni?

Apologies for late reply 😞 😞

Basically yeah you would be throwing your chances away if you apply for both adult nursing and midwifery at the same university.

They want you to show them that you are serious enough to do one of those degrees reason why you should concentrate on one or the other at the university.

If you are applying to separate universities then you may be okay but again they might reject your application at the beginning if you apply for both courses at the same universities you are applying to....

I would strongly recommend that you only conclude on the actual degree you want to work in as a career when you qualify.

So I had a similar thing as geographically I could only realistically apply to one uni

Long term (in 20/30 years) I’d like to end my career as a health visitor but midwifery is my preferred route

I went to the open day at my local uni and chatted with the child nursing admissions tutor and explained this, her advice was to apply with a 100% midwifery statement as that was the more in demand and harder to get course but that when my application for children’s nursing came to her she’d give me a call and I could reference this conversation 😊

I followed her advice and after applying had my midwifery interview invite a week later. My uni portal then updated with my midwifery offer and then a message from the children’s tutor to congratulate where she had seen the offer and ask that if I still wanted to be considered for children’s nursing I could upload a separate personal statement but wouldn’t need to re-interview

Maybe give the uni a call/visit as often nursing and midwifery are in the same ‘school’

Or apply for midwifery alone and if unsuccessful they may offer adult nursing or you could ask about it/apply later for it

Hey @sxniathefirst 🙂

I've spoken to our admissions team and they've advised that if you're wanting to apply for both adult nursing and midwifery, then you would be best submitting a personal statement that is Midwifery focused on your UCAS application. Thank you!

Hi Becky,
If I did apply to both would they be treated independently? Thanks

Hey @sxniathefirst

Yes, the team would look at the applications separately.

Thanks,

Becky

I'm planning to apply both to radiography and adult nursing in various unis so will that be risky and will i not get any offers?also i find it hard to write personal statement for both courses as 1PS

What stopping you deciding between radiography and adult nursing?

I'd recommend writing 2 separate personal statements (it'd help to have a universal base structure then just add things about either course), due to radiography being highly competitive and adult nursing being a course that usually goes into clearing (depending on the uni). In some unis, radiography and nursing applications are handled by completely different departments and others by the same, so you'd be better off emailing and asking before you send it to avoid appearing like you can't decide on a career and that you're not 100% passionate about either course!

Edit: Just to add to this, you might be able to get offers from adult nursing with a radiography ps because I know that adult nursing is one of the courses that is offered to applicants who fail to get into highly competitive courses like midwifery so it could potentially be the same case with radiography

Personally I would not put in any applications for nurcing if grades are likely to be good enough for radiography, as any reasonable exam results are likely to get a nurcing place in clearing.

Applying to different health profession degrees at the same time risks rejection as it could be seen as being less committed to one profession and / or less knowledgeable about what those degrees/ careers look like …radiography v. nursing can have very different potential job roles , type of patient contact/ interactions, work-life balance ,placement types.
