Second year struggling to get accommodation

Is there anyone else struggling to find cheap/affordable accommodation for Surrey? I'm going into second year and have been searching since December but people kept pulling out on me and due to my family being impoverished, it's been hard to find a place that I can actually place a deposit for that either doesn't need a guarantor or accepts Housing Hands. I pay for literally everything by myself and get 0 support from my family whatsoever.

I also have autism which the disability and neuroinclusion team are aware of, but I have not been prioritised for university accommodation and it seems like I will not be getting accommodation with the university.

Is anyone else in a similar boat? Are any of you needing another person? Just let me know, any support at all would be super beneficial right now

Hey @smada_xam, I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling to find housing for next year.

Have you reached out to the student union? They can be a great help in finding roommates and housing. You can find more information on their Housing Advice page. https://surreyunion.org/your-support/get-advice-from-the-union/housing-advice

If you haven’t already, please contact the D&N team. They should be able to prioritise you for accommodation even though the deadline has passed. Please make an application on the university website as soon as possible to get the ball rolling. Welcome

Remember, they also have drop-in sessions every day if you need to speak to them. You can find more information on their Disability and neuroinclusion page on the University of Surrey website.

You can also reach them via [email protected] and book an online appointment https://surreyac.sharepoint.com/sites/Hive/SitePages/Disability-and-Neuroinclusion.aspx .

If you’ve tried the above, it might also be worth reaching out to your personal tutor or the Hive. They may be able to direct you better in terms of support.

Hope you find a resolution soon

All the best

You might consider joining Surrey student housing Facebook groups or SU noticeboards—sometimes students drop rooms last minute. Try posting your situation on the university’s accommodation forum; someone without guarantor requirements might reach out. Also contact local student letting agencies like Student Cribs or SpareRoom—they sometimes accept Housing Hand guarantees.
