Financial support for a parent studying undergrad part-time

Hey,

So I've recently decided upon a new career path for myself, which would involve me going back to uni - very exciting! For context I previously completed a separate degree between 2010 and 2013.

I am now self-employed and father to a 1 year old. I would apply to study the new undergraduate course part-time, allowing me to work around it. Of course being a parent I am worried about the financial strain this will have on myself and my family, so I was wondering what possible financial support I could get? I just don't know where to begin or where to look! But after speaking to SFE, I am now sure that I wouldn't be able to get loan/maintenance support.

Wondering if there is anybody in the same boat who knows of any extra support for my situation?

Many thanks!
Tom

Hey Tom, just wanted to saymassive respect for pushing forward with your goals while raising your little one. That takes guts.

Even if Student Finance England can’t help, it’s worth speaking directly to your uni’s financial support team. Many unis have **bursaries or hardship funds**, especially for parents and mature students.

You might also want to check out:

- **Family Action**: Educational grants and parenting support [https://www.family-action.org.uk](https://www.family-action.org.uk)
- **Childcare Grant (via SFE)**: Info here [https://www.gov.uk/childcare-grant](https://www.gov.uk/childcare-grant)
- **Citizens Advice**: For tailored advice and benefits guidance [https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk)

Since you're self-employed, it might be worth looking at **Universal Credit** too—especially the childcare element. You can estimate what you might qualify for here: [https://www.entitledto.co.uk](https://www.entitledto.co.uk)

You’ve already taken some huge steps. Keep going, mate you’ve got this.

You might qualify for some support if your new course qualifies as one of the exceptions:
