VAT and Private school fees - update

The Private school lobby have lost their court bid to overturn this policy.

‘Private school fees are set independently of government and are inherently subject to market forces. Parents always have the option of not paying any school fees at all - and therefore no VAT - by sending their children to a state school or educating them at home,’ .

Exactly what numerous people have been arguing here for the last year.

Apparently the Vat situation hasn't really affected the private schools in my own city -( think they said they are roughly 150 - 200 fewer students attending since introduction of Vat ). In all the private schools in my city.... Don't know what the figures are for rest of my part of the UK is.

I didn't think that they would have succeeded in overturning the UK government decision on the VAT situation.

There were around 11,000 fewer pupils in private schools in January 2026 compared with the same point last year, according to DfE data. BUT this is a deceptive stat as its not all to do with VAT on fees. There is also a demographic decline - fewer children in both private and state education - so that figure would have gone down anyway. However, despite all the hand-wringing, clearly there has not been a mammoth exodus from private schools and as predicted, parents have just absorbed the increase.

although I have nothing against any private school, I always thought this legal action was a lost cause, a complete waste of time and money
