I’m a year 12 student who aspires to study Medicine. I used to take A level Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology but earlier this week I dropped psychology. After several meetings with my careers advisor, psychology teacher, head of sixth form, tutor teacher and friends, every person unanimously decided that Maths was the better option due to the fact that Maths opens more doors and that I’m on track for an A. Not a single person told me to take psychology. Psychology was my highest grade and I loved the topics so much and I can’t stop missing it.
I asked everyone if I should go back and everyone advises against taking psychology and I feel lost. Keep in mind, if I was to decide I don’t want to do medicine anymore (obviously I 100% want to do medicine now) but for any reason, I would do a STEM degree.
I miss psychology so much and I don’t know what to do. I feel stuck. Any advice?

For the STEM degrees you want to do do you need maths?

I’m currently not sure which degree I’d do if I wasn’t going to apply to Medicine or Dentistry (or healthcare in general). The only science degrees I’d 100% (as a 5th option for medicine) is Biomedical Science or neuroscience.
I’m currently looking into Natural Sciences at Cambridge because it has a variety of science degrees within the subject so I will pick a science I like as the time goes so yes that does require maths. I’m not sure if I’d do natural sciences at Cambridge because it’s obviously very competitive and I’m not sure if I’d actually get in (despite getting all 8s and 9s at GCSE and As and A*s at a level. The competition is wild).
I would look into engineering but I’m not a fan of physics. There is one engineering degree that I love (Molecular bioengineering) but the only university offering it is imperial. That does require maths and chemistry.
So as of right now, I’m not set on a specific STEM degree but I know I’d love to do something biology related.
Well it seems all of the STEM degrees you are interested in require maths? Obviously if you are dead set on med then you don't need it - but obviously you know med is very competitive. That being said, based on your grades, you seem to have a very good chance of at least getting 1 medical school. So, it really depends on whether you are 100% sure on med, because if you are then psychology is obviously fine, or want to keep your other option open. Keeping maths could be better just because if you have a change of heart you still have your other choices open.

How does "maths open more doors"? And more to the point, are any of the "doors" it opens of interest to you in the first place?

If you enjoy psychology and do well in it, stick with it. Maths is no better than psychology for applying to medicine (only one medical school requires a third STEM subject at A-level for medicine, which is Cambridge - the others don't care what your third subject is).

They mean if they have a change of heart, they mentioned a few courses such as natsci at cambridge or molecular biology which both require maths

If they feel that strongly about it after deciding against medicine, they can just take a gap year and do maths (+/- FM) then. Given they seem rather ambivalent about maths now though I can't really see them suddenly being greatly interested in a degree involving a fair degree of maths. There are also plenty of bioscience and natural sciences courses other than Cmabridge that don't require A-level Maths (albeit, it is still useful background).

Yeah fair enough

hiya  you said you drk what other degree you’d do if not for med or dent or smth healthcare related, in which case i’d say defo drop maths if you miss psychology so much. i know you wanna keep options open and you said there are other stem degrees you may consider like biochemistry, but is it really likely you’d change your mind from med? genuine q. and even if you changed your mind from med, isn’t it more likely you’d decide to do dent or pharmacy instead of like biochem? again idk, you know yourself best!

im just saying, you may start building up resentment for having to do maths instead of a subject you loved, so you may end up neglecting maths and not doing so well which is a risk. a levels are hard and you gotta put in a lot of time for them. you may not mind maths but you’ll probably regret not doing psychology which you say you loved and miss.

i was forced to take maths even though i was dead set on either med or dent meaning i totally didn’t need it. people still made me choose maths, not to keep my options open, but because they naively thought maths is a requirement for med or is somehow recommended, when most med and dent unis only require bio chem. after a few weeks i had enough of maths lol immediately dropped it and i’ve never been happier. i got made fun of a lot and lost friends because they said i was too stupid to do maths which is why i dropped it. oh well. at least i’m not failing and being forced to work on a subject i despise 🤷*♀️ i was alr doing latin too as my fourth subject, so i just stuck w that and did an epq instead (sch forced me to do one bc i dropped a subject).

anyways any questions pls ask and best of luck!!!!

btw if you’re under any pressure to continue w maths from sch or family etc, just remember these are YOUR a levels and YOUR grades. you know best. this is a subject you’ll be learning for two years and working countless hours for. if you stick w maths by your own decision then great! but don’t let anyone force you into anything, not w sometning as important as a levels <3
