Royal Holloway for ecology

Hi!
I went to the Royal Holloway open day today for ecology and noticed the biological sciences section as a whole is much more medicine and anatomy orientated, so I didn’t really get a lot of specific information on ecology.
Does anyone take the ecology course? What is the course like (with things like fieldwork, lab work, modules) and how do you find it?
Thanks so much!!

Hey! 👋

Thanks for visiting our Open Day - and great to hear you're interested in Ecology at Royal Holloway! 🌿🦋 I’m sorry to hear you didn’t get as much course-specific info as you hoped - the Biological Sciences department does cover a wide range of areas (including anatomy and biomedical sciences), but Ecology and Conservation is definitely a distinctive and practical pathway within it.

Here’s a quick overview of what the BSc Ecology and Conservation course is like at RHUL:

🔬 Lab & Fieldwork
Ecology students take part in regular lab-based work and field trips throughout the degree. In fact, you'll do a residential field course in your first year - currently in the UK - and another international field trip (recently to places like southern Spain 🌞 or coastal regions 🌊) in second year. These trips focus on ecological surveying, data collection, and conservation practice - real hands-on experience!

📚 Modules
Some examples of modules you might take:

Ecological Concepts and Plant Science 🌱

Marine Ecology 🐚

Population and Community Ecology

Practical Field Ecology

Conservation Biology

And you’ll also get training in statistics, GIS, and data analysis, which are super useful for careers in ecology or environmental science.

🧑*🔬 Final Year Project
You’ll carry out an independent research project with support from a supervisor - it could be lab-based, field-based, or even conservation policy related, depending on your interests.

💬 Want to hear from a current student?
You can chat with one of our Biological Sciences students here - just drop them a message and they’ll be happy to talk more about their experience 😊

And if you have any more questions I’m more than happy to help!

Best wishes,
