Hi,

While I’m not at UoL, I just wanted to reassure you that there are loads of ways to make friends once you start university.
During induction week, try suggesting something casual with your coursemates, like grabbing a coffee after class or going for a walk around the city. Even just setting up a course group chat can be a great first step chances are, others will be feeling just as shy and will really appreciate someone taking the initiative. These are the people you'll be spending the next few years with, so small connections early on can go a long way.

UoL is a big university with loads of societies and events, and the Guild runs activities open to all students in Liverpool, including things like quiz/games nights where lots of people go solo and join tables on the night it’s very welcoming.

There are also some great community groups across the city. If you’re a woman, you might want to check out these groups on Instagram:

Girls on the Go @girlsonthegolpool

Bond and Bloom @bondand.bloom

The Board Girls Club @theboardgirlsclub (if you like sports)

And I’m sure there are similar groups open to everyone or specifically for guys too Liverpool has a vibrant social scene once you start looking!

Hope that helps 🙂

Hey! I've just finished my first year at Liverpool. Freshers is one of the best opportunities to make friends, with most events having a 'meet-up' beforehand so if you were going to attend alone you have an opportunity to get to know a couple of people beforehand. It's also really easy to make friends through societies - it always seems a bit daunting, but in the first couple of weeks everyone is in the same boat, so just go up to as many people as you can! Most people understand and won't judge. Membership for societies is also free, so you can go around as many as you are interested in to hopefully grow your friend group. Hope this helps 😄

Hi There!
Please don't worry about making friends at University, there are lots of different ways to meet new people and find your friendship group:

Attend Freshers' Events- Go to as many Freshers events that your university offers- here you will meet loads of new students who also don't know anyone. Doing activities like bowling or quizzes could be a great way to break the ice and get to know people.

Talk to the people on your course- Maybe after the first induction session, suggest going for some food or a couple of drinks. You're going to be in classes with these people for the next three years, so if you can get to know them as friends, it would be really beneficial.

Speak to your flatmates- If you are in student accommodation, knock on your flatmates' doors or sit in the living room and speak to them when they come in. Ask if they want to do a flat movie night or a pub quiz in town. Try your best to get on with your flatmates as you'll be living with them for a year.

Join Clubs and Societies- Here you will be able to find people who have similar interests to yourself. As you will be attending a Liverpool university, you can attend University of Liverpool societies as well as societies at LJMU, so there are lots of opportunities here to make new friends in the same boat as yourself.

I hope this helps. If you are still struggling after you have tried all of this, perhaps try some apps like 'Meet Up App' where you can attend events in the city and meet new people, or speak to your university and find out if they have any buddy schemes.
Good Luck in September, and I'm sure everything will be fine.
