should i choose maths a-level?

my choices right now are:
classical civilisations
film studies
graphic communications

i will not be doing 4 even if i drop one later, and i am not changing classics

i find film studies interesting and think it would be fun, not so keen on having 2 essay based subjects though. i like the idea of a career in the film industry but i’ve heard it’s very competitive

i’m good at art (can’t be bothered with fine so chose graphics as digital is ‘easier’) and i am not that keen on graphics but i’m iffy about not having a portfolio if i needed it for uni

right now i would like to work in a museum/gallery but i know thats subject to change

if i take maths, should i take it in place of film, or graphics?

would a maths a level be that useful without any other science based a levels?

forgot to say! i’m considering maths because it’s the only subject i enjoy revising at gcse, i’m at a grade 8 currently on edexcel (which is also the exam board for the a level)

I would suggest taking A-Level Maths if you enjoy it! Sometimes having a non-essay based subject is refreshing (I did English Lit, Maths and Physics)! It opens up your objects a bit more if you’d like to go down a STEM route as well, which may not be the case now but you never know! If you enjoy Film more than Graphic Communications, I would switch GC for Maths, but you should do the subjects that you enjoy the most.

I think you should do it. You enjoy it and whatever you do maths will still be a respected A level by employers and universities because it gives you good skills. Check courses you might want do to make sure you don't get locked out of what you want to do if you give something up. If not maths is a subject where you really can't go wrong even if you don't want to go down a mathematical or scientific career path

That's a very unusual combination, and you might like to think what you intend to do with these A levels.
None of them seem to be leading to any obvious future pathway.

Hi there,

my biggest concern with these A-levels: do these combinations allow you to enter the degree you want? While they seem lovely, they also seem random and universities will want closely related A-levels.

You sound like you don't quite know what you want to do for your degree, which is okay! I would identify this first and pick A-Levels that allow entry to these degrees. Also, do not pick A-Levels based on difficulty. Pick them based on what you can actually do with them.

My friend has a degree in art history and is currently an art curator. She did Russian, French, History, Art and textiles. Obviously, you do not need to do 5 A-levels however this is an example of an appropriate A-Level combination.

I would not recommend taking maths if you would like to go into the arts/humanities subject - sixth forms (at least for me) require maths to be taken with another science or further maths.

Kind regards, Jenifer (Kingston rep)
