Physics or engineering at cambridge and imperial?

I'm looking to apply to cambridge and imperial this year. However I am still a bit indecisive when coming to choosing which course to do. I love engineering and have done many projects related to engineering. However the acceptance rate for physics is almost double for the top universities. I could apply for both but the personal statement would be quite tricky to write. I need to find the balance between university ranking and course choice. Anyone got any ideas to what I should do?

These are simply my thoughts as I drink my morning coffee...

Don't worry too much about rankings, it's more important that you are at a uni you love rather than one that is ranked higher on some arbitrary scale. Open day visits are hugely important here.

Also a Physics course at Uni1 will be very different to Uni2. Uni1 might allow you to take 1st year options from other faculties, Uni2 might have no optional modules at all in year 1.

It also depends very much on which type of engineering you are gravitating towards - compare Engineering science at Oxford to Warwick. Oxford starts with key engineering topics from a wide range, Warwick focus in on the "type" of engineering from year 1.

My son was torn between maths and physics as a degree. Open days and reading online course descriptions really helped him decide on Maths.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

If you want to study Engineering, apply for it.

You could also apply for Physics and quickly change to Engineering when you get in.
