Work//Social Pressure

Most of the time at work, all anyone talks about are the exotic holidays my colleagues have been on. Whenever I'm away, they often ask where I'm going abroad, and I just tell them honestly that I'm staying in the UK. Sometimes, I feel like I don’t fit in because I don’t travel. The reason is that I don’t have any friends or anyone to travel with. I don't want to travel solo, and most importantly, I feel like I'm doing my bit to combat climate change and respecting certain cultures too.

I often feel there’s a severe lack of empathy in the workplace. Some people need to understand that not everyone is the same. Not everyone has the ability to travel, this could be due to health, social or financial reasons.

I had a really bad injury a few years ago and it was recommended that I dont do any travelling. I'm happy to say that I'm now able to fly if I want to.

I feel like I don’t fit in at my company. I feel like a weirdo. I feel so much pressure to do something “exciting” on my week off, just so I have something materialistic to talk about when I come back to work.

Can I just be myself and honestly not do anything apart from just properly chilling out

I'm so fed up with it all.

A lot of people go abroad on holidays but get absolutely nothing out of the local culture. They spend their time in hotels and on the beaches tied to them and could be literally anywhere as they are so generic. That's not to say they are wrong to go there. When you've spent 9 months of the year with cold, grey weather, it's nice to get some guaranteed sun and be able to relax, but preferring to stay in the UK and visit its regions isn't to be sneared at either.
As for not getting on with your collegues, maybe it's just that they don't know how to approach you. Maybe they think they you look down on their style of holidays. Have you thought about organising something like a pub quiz night for the office staff. It might be a way of breaking the ice and blowing away the preconceived ideas you and they may have about each other.
But getting back to travelling,if you would like to widen your horizons, there are plenty of groups and clubs putting solo people in contact with each other and organising trips. Just give it a quick "google" and then trust yourself. you may find you really enjoy it§

Unfortunately, I think you're one of those less empathetic persons. I understand people need to get a bit of sun because of the UK weather. I get a long well with my colleagues. The point I wanted to raise is there are so many people that aren't able to travel, why cant you see that. Not everyone has these freaking instagram picture perfect lives!!!

Well given the way you put me back in my place "I think you're one of those less empathetic persons" when all I was trying to do was say that you, like your work colleagues, shouldn't feel pressured into living your leisure time in any particular way, I'm not surprised by your other statement!! "The reason is that I don’t have any friends or anyone to travel with."
Before criticising others maybe you should have a good look at your own passive aggressive stance. Life might become a lot easier for you afterwards!!

I think you're creating your own problem. It's just people making small talk and they don't really care, pointless to take the hump about it or feel discriminated against.

Nothing wrong at all with telling people you just chilled at home, whatever the reason *shrug*
