How can I make the most out of my last year on university?

Hello, I'm an economics student who is going into my last year of university in September. However I am worried that I wasted opportunities like internships and spring weeks. All I have done is worked part time/full time jobs during summer. How can I make the most out of 3rd year? Unfortunately I haven't participated in many societies, but cannot apply for roles within them as they've already been filled. And is it worth applying to both internship and graduate schemes after graduation? Thank you.

Hi @annqbellex

I’m currently in my third year and almost finished, so I completely understand how you feel about missing out on earlier opportunities.

From the start of this academic year, I made a point of getting involved whenever possible. I volunteered to speak to first-year students and participated in activities related to my course, which helped me build valuable experience during this final stage.

Most universities have a careers department that’s really helpful with finding internships, graduate schemes, and other opportunities. So, definitely reach out to them if you haven’t already done so.

To make the most of your third year, consider:

Attending networking events and career fairs

Taking part in workshops or skills sessions offered by your university

Doing any available short internships or volunteering, even if part-time

Connecting with alumni or professionals through LinkedIn

And yes, it’s definitely worth applying for both internships and graduate schemes after graduation. Remember, even if you didn’t get involved in societies earlier, your work experience and any other achievements still count. It’s never too late to make the most of what’s left and plan ahead. Hope this helps.

Hi annqbellex

I’m also going into my final year at LJMU in September so I understand the stress of trying to prepare for the job grad job market.

From personal experience here some of the things I would recommend to strengthen your CV:

Contact your Student union and see if they have any volunteer opportunities related to your course. For me, I’m planning on going into Primary Education so the SU was about to help me find a volunteer opportunity working in a youth centre.

Check if your university has a UNITEMPS department. Through LJMU unitemps I managed to get a paid internship in a school. The also offer law, media, marketing and various other internships. This is great for building up your experience and earning some money.

I would also contact your course leaders to see if they offer any subsidised training courses. For example when I did this I was offered a paediatric first aid course and a safe guarding certification for £30! Most universities will have some form of training courses available to students. This will help you learn new skills and looks amazing on the CV.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your final year!
