Resitting first year midwifery degree

Hi,

I am possibly going to resit the first year as a stmw. I have been very unwell over first year with infections, shingles and I’ve just had my appendix out. I have come to the conclusion that with all the opportunities I’ve missed it would be best for me to resit first year ( pending approval). I’m just wondering if anyone has done this before? I know it’s for the best but I just feel embarrassed that I am. Even though I know it’s not my fault. I know i will have a better experience of first year if I do this though.

Just looking for advice if anyone has been in this position before?

Hiya

Sorry you had a awful year as a first year student midwife but stay positive and look forward to the future okay.

Sometimes what you went through this past year with health issues is probably a good thing because you know that you won't ever have another appendix operation, shingles is unfortunately that you can catch again as a adult even if you had it as a child.

Infections are very unpredictable as you can catch those anytime in life

I am pleased you have not given up on becoming a registered midwife. As you said you have learnt things from the last year which will be good for you for when you get the opportunity to resit your first year of midwifery degree.

You have nothing to be embarrassed about with resitting your first year again as remember that your health comes first and foremost over any degree etc.

Hope you will get approval to resit it and you can look at in starting your journey again as a student midwife with looking forward to being a registered midwife in three years time and the grief and hard work you are doing will be worth it in the end when you are a qualified midwife.

I have never been through this situation, some students have no options to resit there degree because of other health issues but they do go on and become nurses.

Good luck with this 🥰🥰

Hello,

Thank you so much for your lovely reply! It made my day. I am in the process of hopefully getting approved by the university but they said not to bank on it :frown: Im going to try and stay positive! My passion for midwifery will carry me through and now matter what I know I will get there. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to me.

Wish you all the best in the future ☺️

I had to repeat a year! If anything, you start the year with so much more confidence! It's better to have a good foundation to your degree that you can build on, rather than having rocky foundations which could collapse in the later years. Good luck!

Hiya
You were welcome 🤗 🤗 🤗 for my last message ❣️.... Glad it made your day ☺️ ☺️ ☺️ 😀 😀.

That's bad when a university tells you that not to bank on a offer 😞 😞 😞... They should have said that you might have a chance and left it at that 😞 😞 😞..

Staying positive is all you can do as no point being upset or sad 😢 😢

I'm pleased to hear that your passion is for midwifery, let's see what happens first for you and take it from there. You must be offered adult nursing but that's up to you if you want to do that.

I was going to suggest that if you were unfortunately unable in getting a chance to resit your first year again why not perhaps apply for a MCA ( maternity care assistant) job at your local maternity centre if anything available and complete it over the next 18 months and then reapply for university to become a midwife as many students have done that before and qualified as midwives. Or perhaps do HCA on maternity and learn more until you can reapply next year again and hopefully you'll get it.

Thanks for your kind words 🙏 🙏 🙏 😊 😊

Hi,

Aw thank you again for the advice! Thank you so much for taking the time out to reply to me it means a lot 🥰 I think after speaking to someone from the university, I’m going to try and get better in time for doing around 8 weeks of practice. This hopefully should be enough for me to get all of my MORA signed off. I’m a bit worried about it but hopefully it will go well! I’ve had 3 witnesses so far and I might get my first birth when I go back onto CLS which I’m excited about! I have some outstanding elements but hopefully I should get those signed no problem. I just need to be extra proactive with my PS.

Thank you again for your support!

Jess.

Hi Jessica 😊 😊

There's no problem in trying to give some advice to you 🙏 🙏. Thanks for saying it means a lot to you me answering you ❤️ as it is appreciated 🙏

After speaking to the university if you haven't done so yet just remember that don't rush back in to things far too quickly as you could easily have to go back on the sick which means you missing the rest of this current year which I think you don't want.
This academic year is almost done which not going to give you much time to make up any lost time, you can always catch up with things next academic year with placements as you would have to obviously discuss the situation with the university so that they can have time to arrange new placements for you to attend - it might mean you have to go to placement say at weekends during the university studies weeks to catch up or do extra shifts when you are on the next available placement.

Hopefully the university will let you start again soon so you can sort things out and try getting something signed off with mentors/ supervisor. Yes you need everything you do signed off from your mentor or supervisor.

The worst is restarting your first year again which is not really a bad thing as you already have knowledge of what they are expecting as a student midwife.

I really hope you get approval from your university soon.....

I'm here to try to support you with advice ❣️ 🙏 and then you have to sort it out from there with talking to your university course leader and placement officer.
