Top 5% UCAT score - 3060 B2 - Ask me anything!

Hi guys,

As we are now approaching the dreaded UCAT season, I cannot believe it has nearly been a year since I had to face such an exam  It was honestly the most stressful exam I’ve done, not to put anyone off, but I wanted to start this so that if anyone had any questions (like I did last year), they could put it in this thread which I would be happy to help answer! I score 3060 Band 2, so my hard work deffo payed off and I’d be happy to share tips or help with any queries!

Hi, please could you give an overview of how you practiced? For context, I only have a month and I’ve done the UCAT before but I’m retaking it as I wasn’t very happy with my score so I would appreciate any advice. Also well done on achieving such an amazing score!!

Hey, thanks so much! I just checked my timetable I made from last summer and here’s a breakdown of how I prepped for the ucat. I did start 2 months before, but I don’t think thats necessary as I did feel quite burnt out after, plus you have your experience from before so that’s honestly the most prepared you could be! This was how I prepared:

First 2 weeks —> Untimed practise on all sections, with a mock per week
Next 4 weeks —> Completely timed practise, with two mocks per week
Final 2 weeks —> Full mock practise everyday, with a morning and afternoon session

For you, I’d just say to ignore sort of the first half of my timetable as you are already experienced and have sort of an advantage which is great 🙂 I really think timed practise is key. Also, I think what really helped me was that I sat my mocks at the exact time my exam was booked, so that my body and brain would get into a routine of being focused for a long duration at that specific time of day!

Hi, that's amazing! Do you think 3hrs a day is enough ? (I'm reapplying to dent so will be retaking ucat this summer, hoping to do 3hrs a day for 6 weeks)

Hey, I think 3 hours per day is definitely enough if you practise for 6 weeks, but bear in mind how long a full mock would take + reflecting on your mistakes. It might be nice to take a long break in between, and then try do 1 hour maybe on your weakest area? You are retaking though so you’d deffo have some sort of experience already, best of luck with it! In summer, you really will have free time, and make sure you utilise it best but also make sure you enjoy some time to yourself 🙂

Hey, I can’t really remember but I do think I did go a bit overboard with UCAT prep (my score was great and I definitely do not regret it but I was very burnt out after so that is something to bear in mind), and I use to wake up around 7 to prepare for a mock at 8. After that I would do corrections and some extra time practise. I think in the weeks nearing my test, definitely around 5 hours ish was good for me, but I do overprepare in these situations! I would just say definitely take a rest the day before, please do not do a mock and stick to some light revision, to prevent stress and save your energy! It’s kind of like a long race , not really about how many hours specifically, but whether you understand your mistakes and how you save your energy!

Hi! Yes 6 weeks was deffo enough, if not more than enough. I really do think after practising a while, you reach a peak and for me that was mid august (I think the date of my test was the 17th so rlly close to urs!), and so its not really effective once you go past your best. For me, mid august was really the best as I could rest for the rest of summer. It’s funny you say that most people booked for September, because most people in my school who did that ended up preparing really last minute and not scoring as well. I’d say dont think about others in your school as you know yourself when you’d be best prepared!
