Speech and Language therapy

Hi, all
Im looking for university programs that would allow me to qualify as a speech and language therapist in the UK.
Here's my profile:
Bsc Psychology (accredited)
MA Special Educational Needs
2 + work experience as a Special needs teaching assistant in England.

I'd really appreciate if someone could explain the route to becoming a Speech and Language Therapist and what university courses I should be looking into.

Speech and language therapy degrees and pre-registration masters courses are considered to be exception courses by SFE, so (if you are eligible to apply for student finance) you could be fully funded (both tuition fee loans and maintenance loan). A pre-reg masters is a condensed two-year version of the undergraduate course. With both courses, you would enter the NHS on salary band 5.

Use the NHS course finder to search for approved courses:

https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/career-planning/course-finder

It doesn't matter which uni you study the course at - HCPC approval means that they are all held to the same standards.

SLT / lecturer here.

Given your educational background, I would probably advise you to look at master's programmes which are two years full time. You can find a list of the universities which offer courses on the HCPC website here. Different courses have different start dates. Some start in January some in September. You will almost certainly have missed the cut off for this year so I would look at admission for 2026 or -27 depending when you want to start.

Definitely seek more direct work experience or shadowing experience if you can but you are a competitive candidate as it is so do not worry if this is not possible.
